Ok, I'm gonna ask here cause I damned if I'm gonna join a dietry forum for this one question. A car forum will do.

I have a reaction to bread. Quite simply - it puts me to sleep. Seriously, I can have a sandwich at lunch and within 90 minutes I'm seriously considering going to bed. If I give in then I'll be asleep for hours.

However, its not cheap bread - its only expensive bread that affects me this way. I can eat half a loaf of cheap bread and I'm fine. One slice of decent bread zzzzzzzzzz.

The other other thing is that toasted bread doesn't affect me in the slightest. Again - i could down half a loaf as long as its toasted.

I'm also sure its not gluten intolerence as I can eat pasta all day long with no side effects.

Anyone any ideas?

its strange but that is getting more and more difficult nowadays. some MacDs now put me to sleep - and I'm gonna break the trend here - I like BigMacs and treat myself to 2 a week. But I can't risk having them for lunch anymore.

also, while i was away last week south of france and italy i could only find bread at lunch time, and when you have 350 miles in the afternoon to cover it aint good. ended up living on pringles during the day.

really? i'll look into that.

a friend earlier did mention that one difference between bread and toast is that the protien goes from a class2 protien to a class1 protien. but he did admit he was a bit hazy as it was from his home ec class 20 years ago. cant find anything on google though.

You can have a wheat intolerance but not one to Gluten, however Pasta is full of wheat so probably not that.
What type is the expensive bread (granary, malted etc)? you may have an intolerance to the wheat germ that is in a proper brown loaf but does not exist in Hovis, which is bleached wheat and totally artificial(and lost any of the goodness).

Not sure about the toast though...?

oh, come on. thats obvious. toast has NOTHING to do with bread. i still havent figured out where the bread actually goes when i put it in the toaster, but im still just as happy to see its been replaced by toast.

Try quitting the 3 pints of Carling you enjoy whilst on your dinner break, eating expensive bread?

Isn't this about the glycemic (sp) index of certain foods. If you look at the science behind GI diets you'll see that bread type products predictably cause just these symptoms.

The Times did a run of supplements on GI diets, If you Google it I think you may find your answer

What expensive bread do you mean, freshly baked bakers bread, the speciality bakers breads, the higher (advertised as) quality mass produced bread, in white, wholegrain other...?

seriously, if it costs 19p a loaf i'm fine. anymore than that and i'm gone.

the 19p loaves are always the mass produced bleach white rubbish that you wouldn't even feed a pigeon with.

if the loaf is one of these proper baked loaves from the supermarket, or a farmhouse loaf - game over - i'm history.

i've been checking the glycemic index and I wonder if its high GI foods that put me to sleep. might try a high GI lunch (excluding bread) tomorrow and see what happens. if you don't see me post tomorrow afternoon - we may be onto something. all though i dont see why have an excess of blood sugar puts you to sleep - surely the opposite.

Diabetes is affected by both high and low blood sugar levels.

Google for Hyperglycemia, which is high blood sugar/low insulin. I'm not suggesting this is what is affecting you, merely saying that high blood sugar levels can result in a 'sleepy' state.
