Yet more banning - Knives
Discussion
...screwdrivers, those useful ones that can reach right down into your engine bay. Could be a deadly weapon.
...and what about pencils, in the right hands a deadly stabbing tool.
...and rocks. Jeez, they're everywhere and how dangerous! Just anyone could pick one up and bash you over the head or even throw it!
I think a clean-up campaign should be intitiated and all rocks removed from the earth. Right now. If it saves just one child it'll be worth it.

The article in question is here:
http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/330/7502/1221
It's an editorial in the bmj and the opening paragraph carries this sentence.
So, no evidence has been collected.
Another worrying sentence is
Now this is nearer to the crux of the problem. Many attacks, and I've deliberately avoided the use of the word knife, occur in the heat of the moment. Lovers tiffs, burglaries etc. These are not attacks that happen out of cold calculation, they occur when normal reasoning breaks down.
If a sharp knife isn't available, will the crime go away? I seriously doubt it. The reason for the attack will still exist and the attacker will simply choose a different pointy object... Or will crimes of bludgeoning increase? Then what? Ban clothes irons? I've seen some pretty gory police textbooks with images of a skull neatly caved in with a domestic iron.
As I've said many times, banning doesn't work it simply moves the problem.
People will always fall out and occasionally a screw comes loose. Short of putting prozac in the water (and I'm nervous of mentioning that even in jest just in case someone stumbles across it and thinks it's a good idea!) I think death is an inevitable consequence of being human.
Banning merely serves to frustrate and annoy the majority of the population with very little real gain.

The bmj editorial said:
"Unfortunately, no data seem to have been collected to indicate how often kitchen knives are used in stabbings, but our own experience and that of police officers and pathologists we have spoken to indicates that they are used in at least half of all cases"
So, no evidence has been collected.

The editorial also said:
Many assaults are impulsive, often triggered by alcohol or misuse of other drugs, and the long pointed kitchen knife is an easily available potentially lethal weapon particularly in the domestic setting.

Once again, a perfect example of "let's not tackle the causes, that's far too difficult. Let's ban random sh1te" FFS! These tw@ts get paid for coming up with stupid recommedations like this, and what's more, the effin' BBC actually give the halfwits credance.
I give up, I can't be @rsed to get stressed out about it today, it's friday, it's a beautiful day, think I'll ask the driver if he'll give me a lift home from the railway station tonight in his Sunbeam Tiger with the lid off. Be happy people.

Banning should be seen as a temporary measure put in place till a better, more permanent solution is found. This govt just keep banning things hoping the public will think they're solving a problem, it won't, it will involve time, effort and thought
I told you all when they introduced the pointless mobile phone ban,
this govt is lazy and ignorant and is eroding our freedoms with useless legislation

The simple answer is to ban people.
They are involved in every incident, and responsible for every stabbing, child molestation, speed offence and so on.
So, let's make a list of really dangerous people who we'd like to ban. I'll start with the whole of the current Labia Cabinet ...
Oli.
