Widescreen TV about £700 , which one?

Right my old telly is kerknackered, and I need to replace it, not a fan of plasma's or LCD's
Its silly have a Widescreen TV in the car and not at home so I want a good Wide screen TV about 32" and wouldn't mind a surround sound system.
Whats the best make and whats a good place to buy?

We bought the Philips 32PW9509 just before xmas (cost us £1,100 at the time, but did come with a DVD Recorder). We spent a week looking at lost of different CRT tv's, and the Philips was absolutely the best bar none. Really shocked us, as we'd been expecting to come away with a Sony example.
'What Sound and Vision' magazine also rated it the best CRT telly in the world, so it's certainly got the right stuff. It has 'Pixel Plus 2' which gives the most amazing '3D' kind of effect, especially good when watching a movie on a digital source (DVD, SKY, etc).
I reckon you could get this telly off the internet for around £700 (think I've seen in for £675). If you can find it for the price, I doubt there's much on the market that would beat it.

I'm not trying to insult anybody, but with HDTV right around the corner, and Blu-ray DVDs coming soon, that television will be worth a gnat's fart soon.
Depends on how much you want a quality TV right now really, doesn't it? HDTV is not without it's problems, and a 'full' service is not 'around the corner' IMO. Image quality will be great once it is fully-extended. If you're the kind of person to sell the CRT and 'early-adopt' the HDTV system, then buying CRT is perhaps a waste of money. But to most people, CRT represents the best way of getting a quality product with excellent picture quality within the next 2 years.
Plasma tv's have been with us for 10 years now. At first they were stupidly expensive (I know someone who paid £11,000 for a 42" Panasonic screen and gubbins 7 years ago - still working now though). A 42" model can now be picked up for less than £1,000, but even the £3,000-£4,000 models can't replicate the picture of a decent CRT. Even the latest Panasonic LCD panels are inferior. Right now, in 2005, in Britain, with the sources that exist today, CRT gives the best picture.
We've just got one of these www.home-entertainment.toshiba.co.uk/consumer/home.nsf/pages/whatis-pf3-home?opendocument for about £680 - beautiful picture and sound.
I couldn't be bothered waiting the 2-3 years for mainstream HDTV broadcasting, and normal TV looks awful on a HDTV system.

Same way you cant go wrong with a Mercedes-Benz... Sony have suffered appalling quality issues over the last six years. I was speaking to a small AV place who have given up selling SOny TVs as they had a 1 in 3 return rate, which was killing them. The rest of the stuff is OK though

I had exactly the same thing.....never a problenm until last month...died on me.....an uneconomical repair apparentl...hopefully yours will keep on going.....

I've just come back from a few days in the US and the hotel had HD Plasma's. Didn't see any broadcast HD content, but there was a sample film. The quality was breath-taking. Going have to replace all those all news-readers when it gets here

About 6 months ago I picked up a 32inch wide, flat screen Sony CRT for a shade under £700 although it did not come with surround sound. The only problem is it takes two people to lift it and you need to be aware of the depth being CRT

I have a 24inch Sony CRT that I have had for 10 years that still has a perfect picture so did not feel the need to go plasma

We're already filming Premiership footy on HDTV ready cameras and trucks for Sky. HDTV footy comes out early next year, followed soon by selected film channels. The BBC is committed to shooting most of its output on HDTV over the next few years.
Also Blu-ray isn't far off being in the shops, and will certainly be accompanied by a small but high quality library of films to buy.
If you've never seen a HDTV image, you'll be gobsmacked - its like having a miniature cinema in your house.
