To bring down the swelling in my previously dislocated little finger I've been taking a couple of ibuprofen every day.

Over the last few days have noticed that I'm developing a ringing in one of my ears - which is listed as one of the side effects of ibuprofen

Should I stop taking it? Is it likely to be helping my swollen finger at all? Am also doing the hot/cold water thing but after nearly two weeks the finger is still slightly wider than my ring finger ..

ibuprofen keeps me awake, also slows down the rate at which i get pished. if you take some before you have amad night out helps keep the hangover to an acceptable level

The actual anti-inflamatory properties at the 400mg dosage is debatable.
If your finger is that swollen I would suggest stopping the ibuprofen and asking your doc for some anti-inflamatory tablets.
Could try asprin in the mean time if you have no heart problems, aren't taking any anti-coagulants like warfarin or heparin and dont have a sensitive stomach or stomach ulcers.

OK, will do. Am taking 800mg a day btw (2 400mg tablets)

Saw a physio on Thursday and she didn't seem too concerned about it, but am doing everything I can to bring the swelling down before I go to the Nurburgring

Asprin can cause even more tinnitus. If it persists after coming off the medication you should consult your GP especially as it is unilateral (one sided).
Good luck

Ibuprofen is anti inflammatory at 400mg but you do need to take it 3 times a day after food on a regular basis. The anti inflammatory effect can take between 5 and 14 days to have an effect though. The initial refief is due to its analgesic properties.
Ringing in the ears is a rare side effect and normally only occurs in very high doses. BUT having said that if you think its linked then stop taking straight away and just take 2 paracetamol 4 times a day. Again taking on a regular basis will help the pain.
Personally I would avoid aspirin, its more toxic than ibuprofen.

Isn't that dependent on one's particular metabolic idiosyncrasies? I need these things occasionally for pain in damaged joints, and while ibuprofen is more effective than aspirin it also makes me feel a bit nauseous after a couple of days; I don't get any side effects from aspirin.

Having said that I don't take them for any longer than I have to; there is a certain similarity between taking painkillers to keep going, and responding to the activation of the low oil pressure light by taking the bulb out and continuing to drive...

Well I'm on codine 16mg and paracetamol 1g at the moment and that isn't working for me! (just dropped heavy knife on toe). Cant take asprin or ibuprofen so may go on the hunt to see if there's any diclofenac sodium lying around the house! owwwww

Well said that man. I learnt this from a doctor a few years ago.

It works.

Lois, if you can't take aspirin or brufen then I can't see how you are much better off with diclofenac!?
As for the swollen finger john p, I'd recommend the old RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Elevate the hand by resting on your shoulder or just raise it on an extra cushion or 2, or a pillow when in bed. You'll be suprised how much difference this can make. otherwise, advice as above. Stop the tablets if you think you have a side effect. regular paraectamol is alot more effective than wneh it is taken as required as has less side effects.
Agree that if the tinnitus is unilateral and persists you should get checked out..All the best

Lois, as pullingpower said if you cam't take aspirin or ibuprofen you probably can't take diclofenac.
pullingpower where do you work? I sure I haven't seen that TVR around RHH or HGH?

Anybody else found they cant take Ibuprofen because of asthma? I VERY rarely take any medicine because I don't want to built up an immunity to it. Earlier in the year I took some Ibuprofen (can't remember why now) but was almost bed ridden for about 3 days and when I was up had very little energy. I didn't realise that it was the ibuprofen at the time but I was really weasing. I haven't suffered from asthma for years so I was quite shocked and worried at the time before someone (Grandmother I think) suggested I stop the 'profen and sure enough within 12 hours I was feeling fine!

Worsening of asthma is listed as a side effect of this ibuprofen I'm taking.

Have gone cold turkey for 24 hrs and the ringing in ears has decreased but not gone totally. Hopefully will be gone in a few more days.

medicineman,
I worked at RHH until January and now in Barnsley. I only occasionally took the TVR to work and usually parked in the multistory. I did note somebody parked a dark blue Chimaera in there sometimes but don't know who. One of the specialist neurosurgery nurses has a red chimaera also.

You could try alternating between Paracetomol and Ibuprofen, make sure you stay well hydrated with plenty of fluids also try Arnica tablets available from homeopathic pharmacies its a natural product for reducing swelling.
If that still does not work an old Judo trick so you could carry on with a broken finger is strap it to the one next to it with insulating tape

I must have weird sensitivity then, been fine on diclofenac before but ibuprofen makes me wheeze.

Yes, that's right.

I wanted to try that hangover pill stuff but couldn't find it anywhere so I went into my local chemist and said 'look I'm going out to get hammered tonight, I want some of that RU486 stuff'. She kinda looked at me funny and said 'errr are you sure that's what you want ?' I said yeah, I read about it on the web.

She says it's the 'morning after contraceptive pill',

I'm thinking, er OK maybe I got that wrong then. She corrected me though luckily.

It's RU21 that's the hangover pill not RU486.
