want to buy a new mobile ( sony k750 ) on a contract and on the train yesterday was looking at the dodgy ad's u get for interent phone companies eg dialaphone. have always thought they look dodgy in the same way loans advertised at the back of shite papers are but some of them seem really good deals?
has anyone bought a phone with one of these companies - any hidden clauses i should look out for ie any reason why i should go to a traditional phone shop? nay companies anyone recommends?

seriously, online phone sales sites are now pretty good, so long as you know what exactly what features you want before you buy. Delivery is good (2-3 days) and as always the distance selling regs apply so you have 7 days to send it back anyway....

Best deals I've found on phone contracts tend to be on the network's own websites. If you hunt around, they all do online only tariffs which are much better value than their normal ones.
This could be because I don't change my contract every year and so 'Half price line rental for 6 months!!' type offers don't really interest me that much.

Ah, yeh.....ooops. Trying to keep up with the releases is a nightmare...plus I haven't updated the site in 2 months...so yes sue the website

I agree, I've always found the ones at the back of papers very dodgy looking as well.
Never used one but they do seem to offer a good deal, however bear in mind that the cashback, discounted line rental and so on are usually in the form of rebates that you collect months down the line and have to jump through hoops to get hold of them.
I've just ordered a K750i as well and found the best deal direct from Vodafones website, so in my experiance direct is the best deal. As for the highstreet shops, their offers seem to be nowhere near as good as by mail order. I wonder if we are going to see a big cull in numbers of stores (which seem to make up half the shops on the highstreet now) as more and more people go online?
Only thing that worries me is that the bloke in the O2 shop said they didn't have any K750i's in stock as they we're all being recalled until further notice

I am on my second K750i in a week, as the first one was freezing all the time. I had problems from day 1, and so swapped the phone on day 2. No problems to report on this one, although it is from a different software batch. Actually getting used to the phone now and it's very good, although the screen is difficult to keep clean without a screen protector. Camera is better than any other I've seen.
O2 are the most stringent network in terms of the software-quality they allow. First sign of trouble and they often withdraw the phone from sale (although they don't recall them). However, I know of lots of different phone shops where - if they have run out of stock - staff will say the phone has been withdrawn to stop you going elsewhere and buying the phone. They want your business, and if they suspect they won't get it then they'll try to put you off altogether.
Be careful about those offering 'cashback' deals. These are advertised as '£5 line rental for a year' or whatever, but in the small print you pay the full whack each month and then a get a cashback cheque which makes it equivalent to the amount advertised. Which is fine, except that a few smaller firms have 'disappeared' in the time between selling you the phone and honouring the cashback. So only get those from dealers likely to be around siz months later. I'd recommend e2save.com - looks like discount internet-only, but actually owned by Carphone Warehouse, so you know there's some substance behind it.

I had a phone from these guys - it was a cheap deal, and the phone was fine etc etc - theres nothing wrong with them as reputable suppliers...
My only problem is if they sell you the wrong thing (as in my case) they then take around 6 months of phone calls / letters to cancel the contract they set up by mistake! The amount of bills I had through when I'd been told it had been terminated was testing to say the least, the left hand didnt know what the right was doing. That put me off this particular supplier.
Despite the tacky adverts though they appear to be pretty thrustworhty.

I've bought one from www.e2save.com - got a few bits missed from the order, but got everything eventually. It is owned, or part owned by the carphone warehouse.

Used them twice now, no problems at all. Phones arrived when stated and they honoured the freebies (playstation for first one & £60 cash back for second)
