Column Reading Order

When printing 4 verses of a hymn in 2 columns, should the verses go:

1 2

3 4


or

1 3

2 4

Have you thought of putting a number next to each verse? That'd make it easier to tell which-ever you go for.

Personally I'd go for:
1 3
2 4

But I think:
3 2
4 1
would be more interesting.

Yes, they have verse numbers so it's no great problem either way - I'd just like to get it right if there's an "official" way of doing it.

I'd go for

Because at the end of the 1st verse, your eye is used to going down to the next line and ignoring the 2nd column. As has been suggested, a diescrete number makes it unambiguous.
