global warming?
Discussion
thinking about it, I heard that the Human body gives off enough heat in 24 Hours to boil something like 2 Gallons of Water from cold?, if this is the case then could Global warming be the result of the Worlds Population increasing?, think about it all those new heat emitting Humans being born at an ever increasing rate!, does this new theory make any sense at all or am I just mad?, it's just that I have never heard this mentioned before thats all, Possible?

some models predict the shutting down of the gulf stream as temperature rises which would lead to much much colder winters for the UK.
If the Gulf Stream shifts we're stuffed. I mean look at us now - so averse to a bit of weather that the moment we get a couple of inches of snow the country grinds to a halt and everyone calls in claiming they're "snowed under". It's quite laughable really.

Canada doesn't grind to a halt in the winter, and has lovely warm summers too - all we'd get would be better weather, and the ability to deal with snow as we'd be used to it, not a freak occurrance.

My grandfather lived in Canada a decade or so back. During the winter they kept a minimum of two weeks worth of rations stored in the basement for when they were snowed in. During cold spells, they had to get up every couple of hours during the night and move the cattle around to stop their skin freezing to their bones. Cars were modified (and drive heaters often installed) to deal with the extremes of temperature. Road surfaces were often just bare earth with tarred grit on them, as tarmac would be destroyed in a couple of seasons. You should have seen their heating bills in the winter, and cooling bills in the summer - and these were houses designed to deal with the extremes (which our houses aren't).
No, it didn't grind to a halt - it coped. With a lot of effort and expense.
Canada's a big place. The eastern seaboard of Canada (and the North Eastern seaboard of the US) is cooled by a polar current (the Labrador) which descends from the Arctic. If the warming Gulf Stream ceased, maybe the Labrador Current would cease or change direction - thereby giving the North Eastern quadrant of North America a more temperate climate?

If it's cold, rub two boy scouts together, apparently the coefficient of friction is better than with guides.
If it's warm, stop rubbing. Either way, adapt, cos it's not your fault and you can do squat about it.
If you think otherwise, welcome back King Cnut.
Models? Eva Hertzarentacar please, with the cream.

Going for the post hat-trick.
Global warming is claimed to be due to the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, this absorbs radiant heat at a fixed wavelength. After the sun has warmed the ground and it cools off, radiant heat emitted from the ground at that wavelength would be re-absorbed by CO2 and not escape. This is meant to be making the atmosphere heat up (it's not heating up btw). Any other wavelength either side would pass by and be able to escape.
The temperature of an object that emits or absorbs at that wavelength is well below body temperature, think polar regions not nether regions. So if every PHer got our hot date tonight and went outside to cool off afterwards, the collective radiant heat from all our hotspots would eventually escape past the 0.037% of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and out into space.
So sh@g away and forget global warming.
Lots of other ways we might think of as contributing to global warming are really local warming. Local cooling can handle it

I lived in Canada (Calgary, Alberta) for a year, and although it got down to -32C a few times (-50C with windchill), nothing ground to a halt and there was no risk of food shortage. Of course this was in a big city, but my unmodified trans-am never had any problems, the only precaution was the correct anti-freeze mixture...
Yeah, that's about right. Cows are about 1kW. Having the cows in the house in winter makes a lot of sense.
Sure it does. Theatres, cinemas and the like always get really hot and stuffy; nightclubs get their own weather systems.

Even if you put a bunch of people in a room the temp doesn't raise that much.

I like when they talk about sea levels rising.
"and in 10 years time, London may be underwater"....and the rest of the country goes "and the downside is?".

I think it was estimated that if the ice caps were to completely melt it would take 1000 years and the total rise in seawater would be about 4 feet, or something.
Oooh, I'm terrified, better stop driving my car/flushing my toilet/washing/eating/breathing just in case we all die
