The downside is that all the other English clubs get less TV money.....which seems rather unfair to me. Also Liverpool could be drawn against other English clubs in the qualifying or group stages.

Dodgy and debateable. They've not won any league title since 1990.

How can winning a knockout competition elevate them to European champion status?

Man Utd weren't Champions in 1998 when they qualified for the 1999 which they won.

The Champions League is a stupid title.

Most teams in the 'Champions League' are not champions of their domestic league, one thing that 'pool have that all of the other teams that this description fits don't, is that they won the bloody thing in May. Liverpool, not Chelsea, who they beat, not Manchester United, who were beaten by AC Milan, who Liverpool beat, not Arsenal, who are universally crap in europe, and certainly not Everton, who are just crap.

Which doesn't qualify them for the Champion's League. It is for league champion's and runner's up etc, not teams that come fifth 37 points behind the leaders.

Still, not a surprise really, they made a precedent a few seasons ago by allowing Real Madrid in under similar circumstances.

Load of bollox. Anyway, it'll all be ok since they won't repeat their fiendish fluke and they won't progress beyond the first round. But I don't understand UEFA fixing their books like this - it turns my stomach to be honest.

Agreed but at least they had won the championship within 2 years and have done since. To me, that gives a tad more credibility.

I'm not doing down the fact that Liverpool won the champs league, they did well.

I know and totally agree as it turned out Man U were champs in 1999 hence the treble.

You could argue that by finishing 5th AND winning the champions league Liverpool deserve a place ahead of Everton who ONLY finished 4th....but the point is as usual UEFA have changed the rules during the competition which is bollox in my view. They should have said "sorry" Liverpool rules are rules BUT from now on we will change the rules so that the champs can defend.

Actually no one per se, a team that would have had a bye into qualifying round two will have to enter at qualifying round 1, that's all.

edited to add

Also I'd like to clarify the situation vis a vis qualification.

Under normal circumstances the winners of the Champions League would qualify automatically as the top seed in the Group Stages. This would occur for any country except England Italy, and Spain, why you ask, because England Italy and Spain already have 4 CL places, and that is or was, by another uefa rule, the maximum number of entries from any one country. Should the winners qualify from within their own league then the 'extra place' would not be used, but they would still be the top seed. It was, as far as I can tell uefa's intent that in the event of the CL winners not qualifying via their home league placing, that the fourth place spot be bumped to the Uefa Cup, as happened with Zaragoza as mentioned above, this the FA chose not to do, hence the mess. It should perhaps also be mentioned that up until earlier this year there was on the FA website a statement, dating from last year, that should Arsenal or Chelsea win the CL but finish lower than fourth in the league, then the fourth CL spot would go to them, and the fourth placed team would enter the uefa cup, this would have been Liverpool.

In the old days, the champions league meant exactly that:
Those champions of their respective league competition took part in a knockout competition.

Times change.

There's too much middle management.

Well done to Liverpool though!

I doubt if my bank manager would let me borrow a couple of hundred million, and at the same time let me plough my own debt into a new bussiness venture.

Real Madrid are no saints either...

I used to like football.

Football is doomed.

It won't be long before the red card is replaced with a telephone vote for eviction...

Who you prefer to see in the champions league, the 4th placed team in Italy, Spain or England or the champions of some unknown country?.

I am happy with the format the way it is, becuase it preserves the quality of the teams which are entered.

I would expect to see the league champions for each country involved. Them's are (supposed to be) the rules.

But could the clubs not put on a themed night,to draw more drinkers and party goers, thus making more money!

I'm also happy with Morris Minors, Vesta Instant Meals, Gramophone Recordings, Morse Code and Radio Caroline.

Sweet Jesus, so what happens to the new Herzegovanian or Iraqi sides that have suddenly produce a world beating side.

What happens when Smolensky buys Stoke City?

Have you heard of progress.

have I heard of bureaucracy?

Well Iraq aren't members of uefa, so they aren't relevant to the Uefa Champions League, and I suspect that the Herzegovinian Champions, if that good, could struggle through the three qualifying rounds, just like Liverpool have to.
