Damn, can't run it, if it's a small jet with a canard pitching up and down rapidly then eating dirt I think it's an early Gripen. Severe PIO which early software couldn't prevent.

JAS 39 Gripen, the pilot actually survived that I think.

Lordy - he so should have banged out of that, no mention if it was a fatal or not but looked very probable.

Yes he did. One of quite a few accidents to occur. That one was one of the pre-production or prototype planes.

He got a broken arm !

He had another Gripen crash but banged out of that one.

Definitely a Gripen. The accident happened in the early 90s when the plane was still under test. Another early Gripen fell into a Stockholm city park during a display not too long afterwards. Again, the pilot survived.

Although there was an element of pilot error in both crashes, it was more to do with the sensitivity of the fly by wire control system.

Hilts - haven't a clue.

There are no absolutely silent aircraft engines although some can be remarkably quiet when throttled back. Also, in still air conditions, sound might not carry very far - or the object might be further way or higher than you assume.
