I shagged a bird on Sunday...
Discussion
Ive never hit an animal before, narrowly missed a few birds in the past and finally ended up running one over on Sunday. Part of me wanted to turn around and finish him off, the other just to drive on. Looking back in the rear view, all I could see was the poor thing flaping about on its side. Not a very nice experience :( Im sure its been discussed before but breaking hard to avoid critters is probably more dangerous than just driving on.
I hit a cat for the first time ever last year. I was doing about 60; it ran out from a hedge after dark, direct hit, went under both wheels. I felt really bad and just hoped it was a quick kill. I went back the next day with a little wooden cross to put in the verge and there was no sign of it. So I guess I'll never know. It was a big tabby in the prime of life too.
These things happen unfortunatly. I go running down country lanes and there's the body of something every 100 yards or so without fail, mostly rabbits but some pheasants and smaller birds.
The only things I've hit are a frog that was sat in the road and I didn't see it until it was too late (it crunched) and a rabbit that was hit by the car in front so I finished it off.

Don't upset yourself Rob, it's not like you to lose your old SPARK. PLUG yourself into a beer, you'll soon feel better.
I swear I'll dig those plugs out tonight, and post them to you this week, so sorry its been months mate, keep forgetting, promise I wont do it again
Bloody hell Fid, you're a murderer
Watching a small bird flab about, knowing you've shattered half the bones in its body is bad enough, Id feel pretty sick if I hit something bigger. Hitting a cat must be grim. My mom once ran over a peek, which amazingly (given that a peek's rib cage has the strength of an ice cream cone) got up and ran away.

But why do animals get run over? I thought most of them could hear better than people (to hear cars coming from far off), would be familiar with cars and roads that have been there for most of their short lives, and not jump in front of them. Sort of the way critters scatter in the woods when they hear people coming? I've seen squirrels run out in front of my car, then turn around and run back, but I know they heard me coming long before.
I hit a bird once, tonning it down some dual carriageway somewhere the little fella flew across the road, and straight under my car. Felt it bump under the car, and looked in my mirror to see it bouncing down the carriageway
Then, at the end of the day on the way home I almost hit a fox that darted out into the road.
