New recycling penalties!
Discussion
I have just been round to a mates house and he tells me that his local council (Barnet) Are now Checking the contents of rubbish bags and if they hear cans or glass they will not take the rubbish away AND issue you with a £1,000 fine!!!
How on earth will that work then? They leave the evidence with you and then try and make you pay a fine? Surely you would just tell them to bugger off when the letter came!
Also the van that now comes round for the paper will not take plastic, so he rips open the rubbish bags and empties the contents into his van and then leaves you with the ripped up rubbish bags to deal with!
Why do the councils make such a hash out of everything? :hehe:

Actually it can be inconvenient to have to do this.
My mate lives in a small flat with a small kitchen and no storage space, yet he is now expected to have three different rubbish receptacles, his house will start to look more like a rubbish tip by the end of the week!
It might be fine if you can just nip in to your garage or shed and shove everything neatly into seperate bins but it is not that convenient for everyone.

We were issued with composting bins to keep in the kitchen and chuck food waste in as and when. After 3 weeks of them not having collected it despite me having left it out as instructed, I bleached it thoroughly after using the contents to fertilise garden. Minging. Wont be using it again.

Um, isn't the idea of a compost bin to make compost for your garden?

I dunno, but its not exactly difficult to seperate your rubbish, so long as you get a little green box thing. Only bad thing is that the neighbours can see which house is the alchy one in the road!....um....yep, you guessed!
we are the same, even the recycling guy mentioned the quantities of bottles we have!
I very idea of having seperate rubbish bins angers me,
My council tax goes up year by year and I see no improvement to my life for it and now they'll fine me if i put metal and glass in with the rest of the waste
Why don't they take some of the work shy scrounger poplation and make them sort the waste into neat little piles?
I live in a small semi with no garage, I already store the waste bags all 2 per week in the shed, which is a PITA if i need to get the mower out etc as they need to be shifted back and forth for access. I'm
ed if i'm going to turn my house/garden/shed into a mini recycling facility......unless of course they are willing to pay me or reduce the extortion tax

Kingston Council have a much better policy on recycling. You put your recycled waste out to be collected by the recycling truck. Who promtly takes it to exactly the same place your main rubbish goes to and sticks it in there.
There ya go - spend all your time recycling and the waste goes to the same place.

Sounds like Bedford. You're supposed to put recyclables in a special orange sack, which then goes in the back of the same truck as all the other stuff and gets burst open by the compactor and everything mixed up. Unsurprisingly, nobody bothers.
The only good thing about it is the recycling sticker that goes on your bin saying things like "remember to tie your sack securely" and other fnarr-fnarrs, which is mildly amusing the first time you see it. So not much of a plus point really.

Most recycling is a waste of time anyway, certainly for things like glass. The energy needed to recycle it is more than the energy it takes to make it from sand! We're not exactly short of sand either!
not quite true, it actually saves 90% of the energy used to produce the virgin glass.

We got small green boxes for waste paper last year.
I put my old TV Times in it and watch the box blow over, depositing lid and TV Times in the road.
Every two weeks a bloody great waste truck, crewed by three people, probably on £20K+ pa, and emitting clouds of diesel fumes, grinds up my estate, puts the TV Times in the back (if it's anywhere to be seen by then) and grinds away again.
Then I watch the empty box blow over again.
Box is now in roof waiting for something useful to do. It has small holes in the bottom so I can't even collect rainwater in it.
