Well - its finally happened. Some chavvy skidmark broke in to our shed and stole the pair of bikes stored in there. The door backs on to a rear alley and was fairly rotten. It wouldn't have held back a determined 5 year old :rolleyes:
Silly idiots missed the full cannister of patio gas, and fridge full of Champagne, Sancerre and Chablis - arguably far more valuable then a pair of 20 year old bikes!!
Soooo - my question to the PH massive, is where to buy bikes from in this day and age? ie - best value...

how much do you want to spend? I just bought a good one online for a reasonable amount.

My friend who owns a bike shop sees lots of bikes from Asda, Halfrauds, etc.
Usually because they are not built properly in the first place and the whole bike needs setting up.
People buy the bikes for £80, he then charges them £50 to set up, etc...they don't quite understand how/why!!
One thing for sure with mountain bikes...you pay for what you get!

A visit to your local bike shop could get you a reasonable secondhand one that would be better than a cheap catalogue one. Also check out the cycling Mags and forums smallads such as 'Cycling Plus' or MBUK

Have a look round cash converters/pawn shops too if you can bear it. I got an £800 Saracen a few years back for £75 because they didn't know what it was & had a few broken spokes on each wheel. Bargain!

After a couple of years of riding Asda disposable bikes, I finally got myself a proper bike - a Ridgeback Bullit.
Spending the extra really does make a huge difference. My average speed on my commute has gone from 10 mph to nearly 15mph for the same effort.
