In general, Top Gear suggest that the American cars have very poor quality interior trim, using cheap plastic compared to Euro/Jap cars. They also have problems with corners and ride quality

Nah, good for him for not buying another bloody 3 Series coupe (Disclaimer: not bashing it per se, but good to see an original choice even if it's not the best car). Not everyone wants to take the car to the tattered edge of adhesion everytime they nip round another roundabout in Milton Keynes, and i reckon you have to take journos opinions with a pinch of salt anyway.

) when they first came out I thought Chrysler were being quite brave in the styling dept.At least it's a bit different & keeps another BMW or Mondeo off the streetslol, My mum has just put a deposit on a convertible one of these and I went with her to the chrysler dealers last week (my dad was picking up his latest barge, a grand cherokee) to have a closer look at one.
The inside was "not that bad", but I am comparing it to the inside of my cerb - so no real contest. There is some shiny ally about and any plastic is a decent enough quality. The driving position was nice and the 3.2V6 is pretty powerful, has traction control nd abs as well. The boot with the roof up tough is a complete joke. About enough room for a a very small bag.
But at the end of the day it's a glorified SLK. So if you like your drive "clinical" and german, then it's probably a good car for you. I'll be, ahem, "testing" my mum's car for her when she picks it up, so at least I can see if it does anything interesting

Definitely not one for the purity whores among us, but if he likes how it looks and if it's comfortable enough, why diss it?
The Mk1 SLK did incredibly well, BTW, so they must've done something right. I've driven one - a bit gutless and spongy, but let's face it - they're not exactly designed for hooning are they?
Oh, and that roof is poetry in motion.
The Crossfire is 95% Merc and 5% Chrysler - the interior is very similar to that of an SLK (read: no cheap American plastics all over the place) and the chassis is the same.
Slated by the hardcore motoring press in the same way a Multipla would be if it was taken round Nurburg.

Of course the Multipla is the undisputed king of unjustified press slating so it would probably sympathise with the Crossfire.
The problem I have with the Crossfire is that it just seems like a horrible marketing ploy and not a car at all......it's a lot of money spent on reclothing some mechanicals instead of trying to build a new car.
I think they look great as a convertible, in black, with all the optional chrome.
If he was deciding between this and a TVR, he obviously hasn't a clue. People who like TVRs don't like Crossfires and vice versa.
I can appreciate the Crossfire for what it is, which is a little GT with individual looks and lots of equipment, that will be great value for money - probably less than an SLK - second-hand.
I'm curious as to how they drive. I'd still take the manual one though - if it at least has a few sporting pretentions, they are there to be exploited.

Well I take that as a vote of confidence, if that's what Clarkson thinks....
IMO the Crossfire is a bloody good car, especially the convertible, there is far too much anti-American sentiment on here when it comes to cars, I would rather have one than an Audi TT anyday, and as regards TVR, THEY are between 15/20k more expensive, and at least with a Crossfire the bonnets don't fly off.....
