Apparently David and Victoria Beckham feel strongly that there should be no poverty in the world and that the rest of us should be digging deep into our pockets.
I'm of the opinion that one should judge the lecturer not by the amount they give, but by the amount they've got left over after giving. By this rationale the rest of us are far more generous than the (rather self righteous) celebs.

Give pensioners (who fought the last war to keep us free!!!) a living pension not just a couple of pence an hour!!!
If you ask me, that issue is one of the biggest poverty problems we have in the UK, we as a nation seem to be doing a good job ignoring it. It seems the older you get, the less 'value' you have to society.

How true. But if the Conservative Party said that, they'd be howled into oblivion by media-fed halfwits. So how do we stop this trendy nonsense and get back to common sense?
Whilst have do have a great deal of sympathy for the plight of those in less prosperous countries and in particular what was deemed the 3rd World, I am strongly of the opinion that to be able to help others you must first be able to support yourself.
Not just on an individual level but on a national one. Once this country has dealt with the majority of its problems, be it a beleaguered NHS or pensioners living on the poverty line, then we can afford to be philanthropic.
I will happily put a £1 or in a collecting tin or sponsor someone but only to an extent that I can afford at that time. To do otherwise is only increasing the chances that I could become a burden one day.
As for the ads I think that they have run their course now. The point has been made and now it’s time to move on. Sorry to sound so cold hearted and uncaring but people die and people are born every second. It is the way of the World.

Didn't Jesus Christ do a parable to that effect? The "Widow's Mite" I think.
I'm glad its not just me. Ever since that truly awful Christmas edition of The Vicar Of Dibley which started the Dawn French/Richard Curtis/Bob Geldof preaching ball rolling I;ve got really sick of the way that they're dictating to us about this cause.
The original Michael Buerk footage from Ethiopia in 1984 didn't need a bunch of godforsaken multi-millionaire celebrities to tell us what to do - the cause was obvious enough.
But to take a two-hour BBC drama with three of the best British actors currently around, written by probably the best & funniest scriptwriter in the business, and detract from the serious message by being wholly condescending to the audience is just a bunch of arse.
I have absolutely no problem with making poverty history but it ain't gonna happen by us (a)giving a few quid (b)watching Coldplay tinkle the ivories in Hyde Park or (c)marching on Edinburgh. I'm more and more of the opinion that this isn't going to work and only once the corrupt governments of Africa are disposed will anything change.
All IHMO, of course.

I agree the adverts are tedious because of who is in them. it is the new issue for celebrities, there seems a need for people to belong to good casues, witness the rash of colured plastic bands being worn by people now. Before it was coloured ribbons all to signify their compassion, or is it to be one of the in crowd.
I am more than happy to write off third world debt so long as they put in reforms to stop this happening time and time again

It wasn't a parable, but was the story of the widow giving one Denarius, which is all she had, to the temple - while others were giving more. Jesus said, "she gave more than everyone else because she gave all she had". I think that's the one to which you refer. (Though I may be wrong!)

Ok group of people borrowed a lot of money. And are slowly paying it back to the people they borrowed it from. Fine. Now some of the people they borrowed the money from want to wipe the slate clean without consulting the rest of the people who payed out. Hang on a cotton picking minute there! We just finished paying the Americans back after WW2. Nobody ever wiped that clean after a few years!
And anyway what happens when we clear the debt....well probably nothing to improve 99.99999% of the 3rd worlds population. So we loose out, and Rob Mugabe wins!!! Err...sounds great

Hear hear, well said. When all the corupt governments have been removed from africa (last estimate, ALL of them) then poverty will end. I will not give a penny to anything but an individual untill that is the case. I do not see why my money should go to make butchers like Mugabe richer.

EXECUTE bLAIR and his commie cronies publicly,and get rid of envy taxation and bring back the cat 'o nine tails, hanging, ducking stool, stocks and some politicians with a spine who'll get rid of chavs, wasters, pikeys, and council house dobbers!!!
(excluding the decent, working tax-paying council house tenants!!!)

Munter, thats not the problem, it's the fact that Mugabe and other terror regimes borrowed money to fill their own swiss bank accounts and use hunger as a weapon! We should get all these tin pot potentates together, execute the lot of them and bring back a controlled government in these countries for the benefit of their population. until this happens the monies will just go to give these dictators more Mercs, F16s or golden thrones!!!! A lot of swearing and profile-raising gibberish from so-called celebs does NOT help!!!!!

Unfortunately chavs, wasters, pikeys and council house dobbers are voters, and our politicians will always pander to them to keep their careers going. A vicious circle it seems.

By ringing in to the premium rate “vote”/donation lines, premium text entries and the many other network provided services you are also lining the pockets of the service providers.
0870’s, 0845’s, 0901's, short text codes etc all generate revenue, a chunk of which is held back by the network.
For example… 60p or so of your call/text gets donated to the charity… that’s out of about £1. The network providers make thair (rather large) share. Look at the small print.

Yeah right! Do you honestly think that they've got the motivation to go out on polling day and cast a vote - I seriously doubt it.
