What is the best vacuum cleaner for the average 2 story house ?

Currently have a Dyson but thinking of a Sebo.

Purely iMHO, i think anyone that spends over 200 squid on a Vaccum cleaner has more money than sense, or maybe gets some strange pride out of owning the most expensive cleaner there is.

We have a 12 year old Hoover Aquamaster thingy that we got for free off a friend 5 years ago, good suction wet or dry, does a great job. They bought a Dyson, they're on their second one now, the first broke down

I'm with you - we have a 'Henry', feels indestructable despite what we throw at it (renovating the house) and if you shop around less than £90 on the hight street. Job done!

Agreed. We had a "Henry" and then moved on to a "Charlie", Henry's big blue brother. So much power, even I'll do the hoovering with it! Had a Dyson before that which was over priced crappy plastic tat in comparison

We have a Miele and a Vax. The Miele is pretty much indestructable, easy to lug around and inoffensive to use. It fits nicely in a small cupboard. If you have animals the 'cat and dog' model is apparently top notch.

The Vax is big, bulky and there's nowhere to store the bucket of bits and pieces. However, for hard floors and sorting out carpet stains and general dirt build up, it's invaluable. Rather than scrubbing the kitchen floor and then waiting an age for it to dry, the Vax washes and wipes all in one go and does the job in half the time.

We tend to use the miele from day to day, then every few weeks do a thorough job with the Vax.

We (the missus really) did an inordinate amount of research on this a few months ago, we got the "which?" report, spoke to suppliers etc. Basically for cleaning you can't beat a dyson but they break within 2-3 years (this stopped Which making it a best buy) Even our local John Lewis were cheesed off with the volume of returns coming in. They can also loose suction when they start to fill. We settled on a Miele Cat and Dog. Hepa everything with these great turbo brushes that are like miniture upright cleaners (spinning bristles). Just did the car with it this morning and it was excellent. Also guaranteed for 10 years (like most Miele things). You can get some good deals on these off t'internet.

I bought a Dyson over a year ago because i thought it was the best and because i like to buy British where possible ( Roberts, Dualit etc ).

However i have to say that it's not that good. I wish i still had one of those old hoovers with the light on the front.

Dyson's are great I have had a few but they are unreliable. but clean the floor great and don't get bunged up very easly

Having said that, the first one I owned a DC01 blew up just after its two year guarantee.

If you buy a Miele get the filters and bags from ebay, They are a lot cheaper then the high st.

See, this is what baffles me... what is there to love about a device that sucks up dirt?

I've had holidays for what you can pay for a vacuum cleaner! Are these the same people that purchase every type of cleaning product under the sun?

Our dyson is well over 5 years old and still going. As I have asthma, the filter was very important, makes a vast improvement on the normal filters. It does what it says on the tin. For me anyway.

A friend of mine has a Kirby G5 which I must confess is the most impressive vacuum cleaner I have ever seen. Vastly outperforms any other cleaner on the market, but, at a price. I don’t remember exactly how much he said it cost but it was over a grand!

Still, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Crumbs, that brings back memories! My folks won some kind of demonstration of "The Kirby Homecare System" when I was a kid. Salesman turned up, smarmy as you like, and did the full works. My folks didn't buy ... (I particularly remember the salesman's opening line, "Hello, look, let's use first names as it's less formal. I'm Peter, you are ... ?", and my dad replying "Doctor Parker, but you can call me sir."

I've got a Sebo that I bought 5 years ago when I didn't have ANY spare money.

The reason I bought it was because all my cheapy hoovers kept getting clogged up with my long hair and also my dogs fur, and eventually they'd be putting more mess back on the carpet than they'd pick up.

I bought the Sebo in John Lewis and the bloke recommended it as he said I'd break a Dyson within 6 months. Apparently, they're great apart from picking up long hair.

My Sebo is fabulous. It all comes apart, so if anything does go wrong (which it hasn't yet), you just throw it away and replace the part that's defunct.

When you compare the Dyson to my Hoover, makes life a hell of a lot easier as its faster, sucks better and doesnt hurt my back, but your right, its 'wrong' to love a hoover
