How do I get out of Jury service?

I own a business, the business cant function without me and could go under, is that grounds enough to evade the clutches of the court? Help, I cant go, its just not possible 
Edited to add, the proceedings/crime is likey to be serious, correct? Given that a jury is required, and therefore could go on for some time?

I had to do this twice as I had contracts abroad on both occasions.
Phoned them up and they asked me to write a letter, I explained that it could be damaging to my relationship with the client to be absent for that amount of time so early on in the contracts which is less severe than going out of business so you should be OK.
Shame though, I did want to do it and apparantly you only get asked twice

Tell your cheapskate boss to stop whining and get on the blower to the 'authorities'. The number will be on the letter. It's very simple...if you have a good enough reason to shirk your civic duty then they will let you off.

I know a number of teachers who have got out of it on the basis that their classes will suffer. Surely a business is more important and I would have thought you had a good reason.
However, it's worth remembering that apparently you can only defer it once. Which means that should they ask you again, you have to go. I don't know if your more likely to get called again if you do defer, but it happened to a colleague of mine this year.
A couple of years ago they got aout if it, then this year they got called again, and had to go. (Didn't quite sound right to me, but that's what I was told).

I got mine deferred once, (postponed, not cancelled.) When I did attend, we were told that if the case was likely to go on for more than two weeks, we could opt out of that one. Think you then get reassigned to a shorter case. Mine took four days I think, tuesday to friday. We then turned up again on the next monday (week 2), and were dismissed
You can ask to be deferred to a later date or excused from jury service altogether.
I asked for a deferral because the start date for this year was not possible. I've been given a new date for the end of March 2005. It can't be deferred again, which is fine.
Now, all I have to do is survive winter and not come down with any nasty bugs which would result in a doctor's note and hence being granted excusal from attending...
