So here's the dilemma: Every now and then one of the kids is a victim of a minor injustice at school. For example, a group of kids get a detention (or whatever) because of the actions of just one or two. My attitude, when my kid complains of this injustice tends to be something like; 'life is full of injustice, so you'd better get used to it!' My missus is often keen to have a quiet word with the teacher - it's a private school and such communication is encouraged.

I'm of the opinion that such 'unjust' circumstances form a healthy part of growing. One day in the future they'll be passed over for promotion and they'll need to deal with this. My missus, on the other hand, would say 'fight to change the injustice'. It's a conundrum.

I think your bang on. Life's not fair, the quicker you realise that and get on with it the better. Call me a cynic but there is very little justice in the world, learning to cope without it is a valuable lesson.

I'm with you on this one. Sh1t happens and learning to live with it without feeling perecuted or hard done by is a valuable lesson. Especially for kids at private school who are sometimes removed from the hard knocks of life due to their priveledged background ( I went to private school myself, but not from a well off background )

Is detention really such a hardship anyway ?. At my school you were allowed to do your homework, so I just used to do the subject the teacher looking after the detention taught. That way I could get heshe to explain anything I did not understand

I think you're right. It's a valuable lesson and not exactly a hard one. If you were advocating teaching children that fire is hot by burning them, then I may disagree - but the quicker they get used to "that's not fair!... Life generally isn't!" the better.

Don't argue with your wife, even though you are right.... You know how you get a crick in your neck when you sleep on the sofa

I think you are right. Futhermore, if your kids want to avoid the risks of a bollocking, they need to not hang out with trouble makers

I think you're right, she's wrong. Also undermines the children's confidence and the teacher's authority to have Mum running to school each tiime there's an issue of this sort.

When there is the possibility of sex (and lets face it, for most married PH'ers, this is one day a year) a wife is never wrong, always right.

When there is no possibility of sex (the other 364 days a year, or 365 on a leap year, does this mean two days of sex?) a wife can be wrong, and she can do nothing to you..

I think.

If you'd used one of those in the first place, you would'nt be having this dilema!

I think your both right

Yep life can be really sh*tty and you have to learn to deal with it, but you also don't have to take it sitting down and if you don't try to do something about it you will miss out on the times that it does work

How's that for fence sitting !

For the benefit of the jury, are you married Mr Vixpy?

Small incidents of "seemingly" unjust circumstances definitely form part of a healthy development - otherwise all you're left with is a bunch of whiners who want everything their own way and get in a rage when that doesn't happen.

It's certainly good for children to question circumstances in which they find themselves but to constantly raise objections to minor punishments will piss the school off and make them think all parents are complete nanny-goats who bleat "it's not MY child's fault" at every opportunity.

But what do I know, I'm neither a parent, nor a teacher, nor any sort of angel when it came to behaving myself at school!

We all know you're not, but it wouldn't have had the same comedy potential

Actually, you have been a little quiet on PH of late, and I did hear a rumour of a new sweetheart

I think that you are both right. If it is something small that results in a class detention or extra prep then it is good to learn that life’s not fair sometimes.

On the other hand there are times when a major injustice is done and it has to be attended to.

I have always said to ex’s kids that they should accept the small things as part of life but fight the big ones. If they are in the right we will always back them up, woe betide them if they are telling pokies though…
