Having a formal education in wine appreciation and working in the industry for a few years, UK wine still has a bit to go to get the quality consistent. There is a few good ones, but not at the same level as the French. It is down to the cliamate and soil primarily.

Camel Vale has some excellent bottles, Triomphe red is cracking stuff, Madeleine Angevine is a cracking white, one of the best IMO. I reckon they've got it sorted. I had a chat with Bob from Camel Vale and it's pretty much down to chemistry these days, additives here and there and a modern process. I love wine, and also fell for the misconception that UK stuff is poor, sure it's inconsistent and expensive but the operations are very small scale. I have a friend who runs a vineyard and was giving her a hand earlier.

If you haven't tried Camel Vale white (which was the one which I liked lots) go and buy some now.

The French government are just peaved.

They tried to diffuse the international embarrasment that they suffered by misjudging the French people over the european constitution.

They tried to divert attention by firing a hot potato at Blair over the UK rebate. I don't think they reckoned on Blair opening up the can of worms that is farming subsidies.

If you ask me, the farming subsidies issue in political terms, was nuclear.
