The EU national food agency makes sure that the quality of the food that is produced in EU is as it should be, good and healthy to eat. So they test products.
Italy compeated with us of getting the agency but we lost. And the comments after that became more than political...
Finland summons Italian ambassador after Berlusconi bashes Finnish foodDocument Actions 22/06/2005
The Finnish foreign ministry summoned the Italian ambassador for talks on Wednesday after Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi made disparaging comments about Finnish cuisine, the ministry said.
Finland and Italy waged a bitter battle for several years over the seat of the newly-created European Food Safety Authority, and in 2001 Berlusconi told the European Union that Finland did not deserve the agency since "Finns don't even know what prosciutto is".
The duel was eventually won by Italy, and at the opening of the new agency in Parma on Tuesday, Berlusconi was reported in the Finnish media to have again gone on the attack, saying: "I have been to Finland and I have had to endure Finnish food, so I am certainly competent to make comparisons."
"Today (EU Commission President Jose Manuel) Barroso can taste our culatello (local ham) instead of Finnish smoked reindeer."
Adding fuel to the flames, Berlusconi claimed he had used his "playboy" charm to convince Finnish President Tarja Halonen to allow the Food Safety Authority to be located in Parma, rather than Finland.
"In seeking a decision, it is necessary to use all possible weapons. For that reason, I honed up my playboy skills from the distant past to appeal to the president," Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat quoted Berlusconi as saying.
Italian ambassador Ugo Gabriele de Mohr was summoned to the foreign ministry on Wednesday to discuss the matter, the ministry told AFP, but officials declined to provide any details on the talks.
The ministry said it now considered the matter closed.
At a press conference later Wednesday, Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen was able to laugh about the matter, saying that he notwithstanding the dispute liked Italian food.
"I do like spaghetti, as long as it's not too spicy. I love simple and good food," Vanhanen said.
And today I found out that Chirac joined to the bashing....so if this not political playing in EU..then you tell me what is????

Chirac is the President of France, he is not the EU.
He's the elected and appointed representative of the French people. How would you feel if Tony Blair said something like "The only thing America has ever done is pollute the world, and they're all fatsos. Never trust anyone who needs to wear a tent"? You'd be rightly offended.
It's just another demonstration of the contempt in which pretty much all of the EU holds Britain.

Chirac is the President of France, he is not the EU.
He's the elected and appointed representative of the French people. How would you feel if Tony Blair said something like "The only thing America has ever done is pollute the world, and they're all fatsos. Never trust anyone who needs to wear a tent"? You'd be rightly offended.

Witchfinder said:Really isn't how I read it. I think there's a swing in our favour going on at the moment and Chirac and Schroeder are so weak domestically that their is shag all they can do about it ... Chirac finds this particularly offensive to his pride hence the stream of childish insults.
