Oh well it sold anyway. I'm new to this , so I went to www.paypal.com , and money was allegedly there , so I "accepted" it . Is that the deal done ? Don't want to get caught out.

And edit to say , can I just leave the money in Paypal , and use it for future purchases ?

Yup, that's exactly the right way to do it. Paypal is always the safer way to do it.

I have setup my Visa card with e-bay and Paypal and it's all automatic - works very well indeed.

Ah right! HUGE . But I see it quite often on car sales. ie 99p start then they panic as their car fails to reach the required amount with only 1 day left. Also sometimes check when item sold and feedback left (old scam used to be popular on Yahoo!) sometimes item sold and feedback within 10 mins, amazing postal system.

Hang on a mo - eBay is built on trust and you can be a complete nob by using multiple IDs to bump up the price of your own auctions but it's not the done thing. Remember we're British and we believe in fair play!!!

Both - biggest sale was £700 for my old caravan and biggest purchase was £1750 for my new caravan. I've sold countless CDs, videos, clothes and bought suitable replacements. I even bought a £650 bouncy castle off there for my business.

Just meant if a bogus bidder bumped up the price but won the auction , no one would ever know except the bidder and the seller (and 50,000 pistonheads)

Well, yes. But imagine if you'd gone for a bargain you'd been after for ages and becuase your bid was £1 less than the seller wanted he'd got mates to top you, then relisted the item at a higher price?

If you're that desperate, use the 'end auction early' tool.
