Road Tax moan

I have just recieved my road tax reminder through in the post which is fair enough. My sister has just got the same through, very good I hear you all saying. Very efficient as it isn't due until the end of the month. But here is where I begin to get a little annoyed, not due to the cost but due to the principle. Both cars are 1.2 16V's although mine is a 1999 car and her's was only bought last year. She therefore gets spared a fiver by the DVLA. I know it is only £5 but come on! It seems daft to me that there is a difference anyway but it seems counter intuitive that they charge more for an older car, surely it would seem that someone that cannot afford a newish car should not be charged more for the pleasure of driving down pot-holed roads!

Isn't it based on emissions or something? Your 1999 engine isn't as efficient as her newer engine.

doesn't work like that....

your car is registered before 1/3/2001, and is less than 1549cc so you pay £110

your sister's car is registered after 1/3/2001 so is taxed based on emmissions - go here, put in the details www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk/ved/

That ain't bloody right!!

If I had a Bora with the same(ish) Diesel engine that was new post 2001 then my tax would have been £115.

As my car is Sept 99, its taxed at £170!!!! £55 bloody quid difference.

How stupidly annoying is that!

That is what I am talking about funkyrobot... doesn't seem fair, and I know mine is only £5 but it's the principle! If I am not mistaken my car has the same engine in it as a post 2001 one.


I personally choose to have the car I have at the moment (no jokes please ) but if I was scraping to afford a car and was being charged more for the priviledge ( of having an older car) I think I would have a point in being a little annoyed.

When they started the reduction for smaller engines I lost out - because my engine was 3cc too big.

Rainbows were in black and white, too. And the price of butter. Shocking.
