Yes, it's a fearful future that's written before us Gents. 968, I am aware and concerned by your fears. Northern Ireland SHOULD be a lesson to us all! And THAT was amongst Christians FFS!!!
British mainland society is "largely" different however, it IS in a "state of change" and becoming multi-cultural in a way that "I" don't think exists anywhere else! It's Slow of course but: in history, it always has been, indeen the mixing of cultures........slowly.........is necessary to avoid conflict.
The MAIN thing is to allow religious "freedom"! We here in Britain I feel do a good job, far........better than most. Don't we have the right to ask the same of others?
L.A. What you describe in the U.S. of course is the future for us if the extreemists get their way.

Those who because of their "compulsion" cannot: let be, and feel that others feel differently, are the problem........... there IS, I fear also a "Northern Ireland" type "deeper" resentment present which transends religion also at play.

Bill OReilly is creepy. And a Catholic (not that Catholics are creepy) but, most born-again Christians distinguish between themselves and Catholics. They think Catholics worship Mary and that they believe in idols and stuff (not all, but I've been told this by some). Anyhow, that guy is just a rude jerk. And even extreme Christians will fight amongst themselves.
The religious lunatic fringe aren't such a far cry from being religious terrorists themselves. I think it's only a difference by degree. They're already extremists who can't bear to let anyone else just live their own lives. The KKK reminds me of the Muslim extremists. Granted, they didn't blow themselves up, but they used a religious (and racist) excuse to terrorize and kill others (blacks, jews, catholics, etc). They apparently consider themselves Christians, though I never understood the burning crosses.
These people are stunted life forms for not being able to find any common good and would rather alienate people and broaden divisions as long as they have the last word.

The worst are of the born again variety. If only they'd exercise their beliefs in private and not try to convert everyone in sight by insistent persuasion - or at the point of a rifle.
Yes LA, "normal" people , agree to disagree, and then ...get on with their lives in "total" disregard of each others religious bias.
Here in Britain. It seems to me that this is a lesson that we: "the British" learned years ago.
But ...Now... We are faced by an imported Muslim society that does not think this way.
The "EXTREMIST" Fanatic Muslism "right" does NOT see any other than "the Path of Allah" to be the correct one for anyone, including the European Christian "Infedels".
It's a "Northern Ireland" situation on a Worldwide scale and is extremely dangerous. I feel that: Robin Cook in his Resignation speech, forcast this for IRAQ......... And in 50 years time he will be shown to be "correct"! Perhaps then the U.S. and the U.K. will withdraw!

A (largely urban) majority doen't believe you should do that sort of thing to foxes and get any satisfaction from it. Majority decides to dictate to minority. And, frankly, Brits don't. Not on all sorts of issues. Its just fashionable at the moment to consider oneself tolerant of other religions (largely due to an agnostic population amonst the aboriginal races).

My understanding of both Christain and Muslim faiths is that they teach the need to convert the non-believer and that by doing that they are doing you a big favour and showing you utter respect by sharing with you their faith. The disciples of Christ went around doing it, and the Koran teaches that Mohammed was a prophet spreading the word of Allah. The 'books' can't be re-written to account for the 21st century because they are the word of God/Allah.

Communist Russia failed to ban religion as has China - why do you think a ban would work?
Banning something does not work. Lets face it drugs have been banned and it's hardly stopped people using them has it. But education has let the "youth" of today make an informed decision.
Religion is "educated" into the beliver. So what we need to do is educate the young against religion. RE lessons in school should be all about how religion was useful in the past, how goverments used it to keep control of the populous etc, but in the 21st century we need to be moving forward, while religion is holding us back and creating a hideing place for trouble. Expose it for the sham that it is and kids will make their decisions.

Yes we can survive without religion but we should have the choice to follow or not or to even invent our own. Religion and faith is not generally a problem but the baggage that comes with people being people (greedy, acquistive, power-hungry, scared...) causes the problems.
Many regeimes have (and still do) repressed Christianity but it still thrives (which is seen as an argument for it being truth, I prefer to see it as an argument for human stubbornness!). We live 'free' and expect freedom which you can't have if you remove freedoms.

Ever met the fanatical atheist? I have. Plenty of them around. You should see the reason and logic just dissappear from behind their eyes whilst they rant about how all religion is bad and should be banned. They don't want to accept that someone else may think differently. They want to be evangelical about it.
No better than the Crusaders/Jihadists IMO.
