Hotels in Padstow

Hi Pete, We stayed in "the old custom house" last year. It is RIGHT in the centre of padstow - 10 paces outside the front door and you are in the harbour. It's a pub/restaurant and hotel, clean, pleasant and rooms are ok, but not that big. Then again - you don't spend much time in the room.
I can't remember the price, but it wasn't that expensive. If I was going back to Padstow I would stay there again.

I can't remember the price, but it wasn't that expensive. If I was going back to Padstow I would stay there again.

My good lady fancies the Rick Stein seafood course but the difference between staying at his hotel and staying elsewhere is over £100 each a night!
No worries Pete, His seafood course is supposed to be excellent.
As far as eating out is concerned we ate at Stein's Cafe which was very good, but I would also recommend a small restaurant in the centre of Padstow called Margot's. It only seats about 25 people so booking is essential, but the food is superb and excellent value.
The only other bit of advice I have about padstow, is the distinct lack of 99RON fuel anywhere in that area of the country!

I'd avoid Padstow if I were you. Geographically, the best bits are further up the coast, other side of the river. If you do insist on going there, go towards Trevose Head (Constantine Beach) and you'll see Trevone signposted (look at a map) drive there, park on the beach carpark, look up the field and see "Round Hole", walk up to it, go down the path and out through the cave to the sea, there are rocks encrusted with iron pyrites (gold crystals) big slate platforms, an amazing view with big caves, sea arches. Going down round hole is a must if you're in the area. It's unspeakably beautiful. Try lower tides.
I stayed in a little B&B in the centre of town run by some lunatic old bird. I think there was only one room (!), it was beautiful in the loft of the building and had loads of character. It was recommended in the Rough Guide.
However the lady who runs the place is mental and *will* grab you for hours to talk about religion, politics, alcoholism, etc. which will either (1) scare you, (2) give you the opportunity for a P&P style rant, or (3) eat into your precious drinking time.
As to restaurants, Rick Stein's on the quay is
pricey, and I'm not convinced that it's worth the money. He has 3 places in Padstow though, and the second-rate place (bistro?) is still very nice and I had a great meal there (and pretty decent wine). Then again, I'm not rich...
Good for laughs is to drink in the locals' bars - there seem to be a lot of local alcoholics in Padstow for some reason.
