Discussion
From our security officer:
At present there is a security alert at Canary Wharf. The Police have advised me that this is a 'Suspect Package that has been left on a bus'. Please avoid the area while the Police deal with this matter.
edite to add: I've only just got in, and 10 minutes ago there was bugger all happening...

No I don’t but my girlfriend works for UBS above Liverpool Street station.
I understand that everyone is more vigilant about suspect packages and all, it just seems to me that people look too far into a situation. Ok so a package was on a bus, do you know it was a bomb, or was it just someone’s sandwiches!
I guess with forces training I have a different outlook on these things, no bother

Lots of stuff!
Loads of training in the RAF, spotting IED’s and controlling a situation. Most importantly just look at the facts and not to speculate.
So you see a package, say on a bus:
Ask a few people if it is theirs, or they know whos it is
If no luck take a close look at it but don’t touch it at all.
Inform the diver
If the driver decides to pull over he should do it in a suitable location and not in the middle of a high street.
Ask people to turn off their mobile phones, once off the bus. This is because the mobile will send a signal to the network to say it is being turned off, and you do not want to expose the IED to a potential source of ignition.
Call the bib from a landline.
An IED is exactly what the name indicates, an IMPROVISED explosive device. The variations of device that can be used is unlimited. Limitations as to the type of device built are only made by the creativity and skill of the person constructing the device itself.
Historically, IED’s have played a large role in acts of terrorism world wide since the second world war when they first started to appear. South Africa has certainly seen it’s fair share of IED’s utilized during the apartheid era, ranging from Walkman headphones loaded with explosives to parcel and car bombs. The prepared protector should always be aware of these devices and the potential threat they pose. A basic knowledge of explosives technology will assist in the recognition of a device as well as the physical searching for a device.
In the event that you should locate a device, your actions are the same. React according to the 4 C's:
Confirm
Clear
Cordon
Control
CONFIRM that the device is in fact an IED. Generally the mark - one - eyeball is the tool utilized for this with due caution and a bit of common sense.
CLEAR the area of bystanders immediately.
CORDON the area of so that no-one can gain access thereby placing themselves in danger. This needs to be done in an authoritative manner without causing mass pandemonium.
CONTROL the situation until more skilled help arrives. You should either contact the relevant authorities yourself or delegate someone to do so for you.
The next "logical" question that most students ask, is "How do I defuse it?". The logical answer is of course - YOU DON’T! Never attempt heroics on an IED or military explosive - no matter how well you know such devices. Confirm, Clear, Cordon and Control until the Police arrive on the scene to handle the matter at which stage you should appraise them of your findings as well as of any suspicious persons you may have observed.
Finally, although we are dealing mainly with IED’s, EOD should not be overlooked. (Explosives Ordnance - limpet mines, anti personnel devices etc.)
Most persons with a military background will have been trained to some varying degree in EOD recognition, should you not have been trained in this area, a visit to the local police station should prove fruitful as they will almost certainly be willing to discuss the more common devices with you for purposes of recognition - provided of course you explain to them why you are so curious!
I guess I am a little wound up by people at work.
We are currently having searches carried out on our cars and out person, when entering and leaving work. I had a tourch on the boot of the Cerbera and the police said I should not have it as it could be a bomb, as it didnt work. (I just need to charge it up FFS!)
He was only a spotty PC though!

I'm not sure that's very fair. Terrorist bombings are on people's minds because it actually happened and so there's a much greater sense of realism with all these incidents. It's human nature to be nervous (OK - let's be clear I mean nervous in a descriptive way not that Nervous bloke with the SP6 Cerb - you should REALLY be worried if you think you're Nervous

I agree, sorry about my rant but I am sure we all see each others points?
I also agree about that bloke from norfolk, he's a nutter!
