Learning to scuba dive?

Really fancy learning to dive and wondering if anyone has any experience of undertaking PADI training abroad.
Started training years ago with BSAC in UK but never finished it off (all out of date now) so have a bit of experiece and know what to expect.
So anyway, off to Thailand next week and having a look round it seems to me you can do a 4 day open water course for about £200. Is that good value? Anyone any advice or experiences to share on the subject?

I learnt in Australia but know of a few people who have done so in Thailand.
As far as I know it is as good and as cheap as it appears. You need to be a bit sensible with the operator as there are some cowboys out there (as there are in any country/hobby etc).

I did my PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water in Belize, back in '93. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Especially when my brother lost control of his BCD and shot skyward, straight into the bottom of my dads tank.
The dive was called short, not coz my brother was injured, he was fine - what with his head being thicker than an air tank, but because I had used up all my air laughing. And the sea was a funny yellow colour

Blimey - you go diving in cars and redundant military vehicles? I`m impressed.
Any reccomendations on where's good in Samui? that's where I'll be when wanting to do it.
Looking on the net, BSAC/PADI seems to be like Catholics/Prodestants !!
They seem to delight in rubbishing one anothers training standards.
PADI can't be that bad can it, the BSAC lot don't like em at all. Why??
