They run at a possible attacker backwards... the spikes are fairly loosely attached and have barbs on the ends so they stick in the attacker. They are usually not very clean and the wounds are highly likely to go septic. If the attacker survives the sepsis it never goes near a porcupine again.

Many years ago, in Italy, I saw an Ambulance that had hit a Porcupine in the road, first thing I saw was the Paramedic clubbing something to death in the road tured out he'd hit the porcupine and was finishing it off, but there were spines everywhere, I understand that they fall out easily if the porcupine is distressed or attacked.

They do regrow, though I'm not sure how long it takes. I don't think they need to use it that often though, as the message gets around.

Except cats are too smart to get into that mess! They sson learn that hedgehogs are impenetrable and leave them alone.

Pretty much why I give the type of dog a wide birth, seen far too many nasty incidents. Not that there are many bad dogs though just bad owners, at best some of the breeds should be muzzled in public. Think of the porcupine .

Not meant that way and no offence taken or meant. Deffo didn't want to sound like her, besides my voice is too deep .
Its just the amount of scrotes around here who think its big and clever to let their dogs try to rip the throats out of others. Beleive me I've seen a few incidents over that last couple of summers. Personally I'd castrate the owners first, as I said not normally bad dogs, just owners.
