Help - Passport Problem

My daughters boyfriend and herself are meant to be going to Bulgaria in a weeks time, trouble is that he has just found out that his passport has expired. (The last one he had was under his mothers name as he was a kid at the time) Can he go to London and wait for one or what ?

Yes - she should be able to get a same day turnaround, but there'll be lots of queueing involved and standing around waiting. Not sure what the rules are these days, but make sure she takes everything she could possibly need including old passport, photos, forms, and proof of travel arrangements.
I got mine in one day but it does mean lots of queuing!
Go and get the passport forms from the Post Office, fill them in and take that and all the required docs to London. If it is a new passport, i.e. the old one has expired, all that is needed is the old passport.
You need to ring the passport office in London and they will give you a time to turn up. In reality about 50 people get the same time but it staggers the rush. if you don't have the time in advance they are within their rights to turn you away.
Thats about it from memory other than saying doing it on the day costs more!!!!

Thanks for that folks, but have now been told that he has got an appointment in the northern ireland office (No spaces in London)on friday at 9 in the morning. He can't afford the air fare so looks like i'v got a trip to Stranraer tommorow night.

Ring the Peterborough passport office. If you're in London it's only an eighty mile trip!
I recently renewed my passport, the process was very easy and quite painless... not like days gone by!
I booked an appointment at the London office (near Victoria Station) arrived 5 mins early and was called to a desk within 10 minutes. All my documentation was in order (very important!) and the clerk was finished with me in less than 2 minutes. She gave me the option to either get the passport the same day (printed onsite) or to have in mailed to me by special delivery within the 7 days (printed in Peterborough). As it was slightly cheaper, I wasn't travelling for 2 weeks and it meant not having to wait for it to be printed, I opted for the latter, but then fretted all week about whether or not it would turn up.
The same day printing option (check local office for availability) would have meant going for a wander, having some lunch
, doing some shopping and returning about 4 hours later.... no great hardship.
In short, he needs to do the following asap:
1. Get application forms from the Post Office.
2. Call the local Passport office, check the options available.
3. Make an appointment for the morning, so that it can be printed the same day.
4. Ensure all documentation in order.
5. Ensure that the new photograph is validated by a professional, unless he can be recognised from the old passport.

In Essex, his mother rang them and the only place in GB was N.I that could give him an appointment. So it looks like a nice little 882 mile round trip Thursday night/Friday.
At least it means that by leaving 8.00pm Thursday and getting back to Scotland about 2.00 pm Friday, I may just get back to Essex for last orders.
(And while he is there I can go for a decent pint of the black stuff

Agree about the boyfriend but A: I'm her dad and B: she is a teenager + (sign of cross to show i'm scared)
and C: she is going for 4 weeks (peace and quite) only her 2 brothers to put up with!
So maybe worth the trip.

So does this mean that they are posting it out?...
If so, this takes up to 7 days and you need to be in to sign for it when the courier turns up. If you are not in, you need to phone a number or go online to arrange a new delivery which will probably take another 2 days.
Are you sure no office could do a same day appointment before the departure date?!!!
