Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo told a radio show host that the U.S. could "take out" Islamic holy sites if Muslim fundamentalist terrorists attacked the country with nuclear weapons. He made his remarks Friday on WFLA-AM.
Talk show host Pat Campbell asked the Littleton Republican how the country should respond if terrorists struck several U.S. cities with nuclear weapons.
"Well, what if you said something like — if this happens in the United States, and we determine that it is the result of extremist, fundamentalist Muslims, you know, you could take out their holy sites," Tancredo answered.
"You're talking about bombing Mecca," Campbell said.
"Yeah," Tancredo responded.
The congressman later said he was "just throwing out some ideas" and that an "ultimate threat" might have to be met with an "ultimate response."
Spokesman Will Adams said the four-term congressman doesn't support threatening holy Islamic sites but that Tancredo was grappling with the hypothetical situation of an attack deadlier than 9/11. "We have an enemy with no uniform, no state, who looks like you and me and only emerges right before an attack. How do we go after someone like that?"
"What is near and dear to them? They're willing to sacrifice everything in this world for the next one. What is the pressure point that would deter them from their murderous impulses?" he said.
Mohammad Noorzai, coordinator of the Colorado Muslim Council and a native of Afghanistan, said Tancredo's remarks were radical and unrepresentative but that people in Tancredo's position need to watch their words when it comes to sacred religious sites and texts.

Considering the main aim seems to be to create an Islamic world state then I'm not sure you can. Just make sure security is top notch and we take a more american view to immigration and visits by questionable parties could stop it happenign over here again - although its probably too late (horse, door, bolted etc).

The thing is, if as in the scenario the guy gives, terrorists claiming to be acting in the name of Islam managed to set off one or more nukes in the U.S. with a massive body count, since there would be no state to go for, I could see a large amount of public support for what this guy is suggesting. Scary, but true IMHO.

Mecca lies in Saudi Arabia, the Saudis are about the only allies that the US has in the middle east (apart, of course, from Israel), so I don't think it's too likely TBH.

Except for the fact that the House of Fahd is very shaky these days, and despite what Dubya and co. may say, Saudi Arabia is actually a far greater hotbed of Islamic fundamentalism than most of the rest of the middle east including Iraq; and after all, Bin Laden is a Saudi, as were all but one (or two) of the 9/11 hijackers. Remember also I'm talking about about middle America's opinion here...

Well, we could stop invading their countries and stop trying to shove western society down their throats and stop forcing them to live like a western civilisation.
They've managed for centuries the way they are, why the hell should we stop them now.
If we stopped interfering then there probably wouldn't be any more terrorism.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. We can't find or punish the culprits directly responsible for this attack so we'll nuke his neighbours/brothers/sisters instead!? They/we preach democracy and it's way of life across the globe yet this... this...... pillock is declaring he'd be prepared to murder - and let's not make any bones about this, it would be murder; plain and simple - thousands upon thousands of innocent people to get back at our enemies!?
