Are BB guns illegal?

Just seen a couple of hooded scroats on the field behing my house.
Playing around with (not shooting) what looks like a BB gun.
Are these things illegal?
I've taken a discreet photo of them in case any incidents happen and have asked the community patrol people to get over here and have a word with them.
My kids are grounded pending!!!

They're not illegal, but are subject near enough to the same laws as air guns. I.e. are not allowed in public places. You could quite reasonably call the police and say you've seen someone with a gun outside. When the armed police come, they'll soon stop it.
Interesting sideline...My friend was shooting some scenes for his media studies (
) coursework in a car park. He had a cap gun for it. Some old lady naturally misunderstood, and 10mins later my friend was talking to several armed police men!

They were doing weed in it, I'm no prude but asked them 'nicely' to go do it somewhere else. they answered back in a chavvy way, so when I asked them 'really nicely' they decided that they were going anyway!!!

Replicas might be used in crime but, when they're no longer easily available, what will these criminals do?

They will be soon, the bastards are ruining everyones fun, I can understand keeping them out of scrotes hands where they might accidently get shot by the police (not that it happens often enough though) but I do hope they let airsoft continue in some form, its so much more fun than paintball

I've got a superb Tokyo Marui replica of a Desert Eagle in a shiny bling finish. I use it to shoot next door's cat when it comes round harassing my cats. Gas powered too, so it stings a bit from 20 yards, and is very accurate in still conditions. It even weighs the same as the real thing!

I used to play with these when I was in my teens, I grew up in the country where you could goto places where there were no other people to see you and get scared and call the armed response unit! You'd have to be mad to 'play' with one in an urban environment though.
Was good fun, and we'd keep them boxed up and well out of sight to and from where we were going. I did have one or two friends who got in trouble for walking across town with them stuck down their trousers though.
Only recent encounter with these things recently though was when I took some photographs for a friends film project while in Uni. They used lots of BB guns, he told the police where and when, what they were using, and had guys with signs standing around saying FILM SHOOT-DON'T PANIC. Made me chuckle! Never got in any trouble, and the Police were very nice about it, they didn't gun us down or anything.

You could be arrested under a number of offences for that Nubbin:
1. Animal cruelty under Section 1(1) Protection of animals act 1911
2. Criminal damage (a cat is property)
or just to reallyup your life, an indictable offence...
"Posession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence" under section 16(a) of the firearms act... this could happen if for example someone saw you weilding your weapon and called the police. You might even be arrested at gunpoint after having a containment put around your house.
Nubbin - I suggest a water pistol would be more effective and potentially cause you considerably less grief
The later offence is what the kids in the park would be nicked for
Mungo, dear boy - it is an offence to carry imitation firearms in a public place - is that right? If you and the BiB have nothing better to do than harrass law-abiding citizens for popping off plastic pellets at a marauding animal, then it is a sad day for this country, and for our Police force.
Plus, you would have to prove all of the above - i.e. "with intent to cause fear of violence".
My garden faces onto open agricultural land in all directions, and is not overlooked by any other houses, is surrounded by 6' walls and hedges, and isn't even on a road - I live down a non-adopted farm track. So someone would have real trouble even seeing me with my "dangerous" weapon.
You would also have to prove the cruelty and criminal damage by actually seeing me shoot and the cat leap in the air shouting "Ow, my feckin arsehole". And of course that would assume that actaully aim directly at the cat, and lastly that I could actually hit the bloody thing! (So far it's cat 3 nubbin 0)
