increase/lack of guard in petty crime?

Just chatting with my girlfriend today at work. We both work in London and she was commenting how, what with all the police being diverted to other duties, will there be an increase in petty crime?
Well, later, as bad coincidence would have it, in a pub on the way back to the train station, very near to a recent incident, she has her bag stolen, from what must have been in front of our noses!! wallet, cards, phone, and a few personal things too! Very upsetting! She is normally the most vigilant person ever, who notices everything, even down to what colour shoelaces the chap sat behind us to the left is wearing!!
OK, so police would not have been in the pub anyway, but perhaps we are being less vigilant of the normal things (i.e potential thieving scum chavs) in preferenc to more prominent threats.
Message - please be vigilant for anything - some unscrupulous individuals may play upon the sudden state of emergency. Dont let your guard down!
