Hi,
As Im sure most of you will be aware from my threads by now I am in a semi pro band desperately trying to 'make it'. We're ready to throw everything at this we just need the helping hand from someone in the know. What I think we need now is some decent management and direction to see us right...
Does anyone here work in the music business or have any contacts that they would be willing to speak to on my behalf (or pass my details on to)? See www.eaves.biz if you havent seen/heard what we're about. Feel free to join our site forum and post your responses there if you feel more appropriate.
The other thing we'd love to do is go and gig abroad - any contacts for europe / asia gigs would be hugely appreciated. I think we are good enough, we just need someone else fighting our corner. Feedback always gratefully received too!

Have you contacted any professional bodies such as the Music Managers Forum or the Musicians Union? They could probably offer some tried and tested advice and put you in touch with potential managers.
I could put you in touch with some people in Toronto who might be able to help with getting you gigs if they are available.

We have looked at most of the 'usual' places and have the MU stuff (although we could probably make better use of them to be fair). We are speaking with music lawyers at the moment to see what they can offer.

Theres a thread somewhere where someone asks about a similar thing for their daughter.
My best mate who is in the music industry replied (quoted by me) with a fairly comprehensive plan of attack.
Its going to be a little different for a band but I would imagine the same holds true generally.

I think we've probably got around 250-300 left of our original 1000. Obviously lots of these will have gone to industry/promoters etc but theres quite a few 'Out there'!!!

Yep, I agree... although theres a lot to be said for careful venue selection. Some of the dives we've played you're lucky to drag in attract punters let alone industry reps.
Unfortunately a lot of these tend to be the 'Pay to Play' type promoters too. So you bust a gut to get a gig - think you are going to turn up somewhere with a reasonable PA/Stage/Organisation and you wind up paying a couple of hundred quid to have a glorified rehearsal.
I am hoping to be able to devote even more of my time to the band soon (Im hoping for redundancy at work) which will allow me to throw everything at it and give it everything.
I have very limited numbers of demo discs left now, if you can think of any good contacts I will happily send on an album and one of the remaining demo discs -
(I think we are going to have to do another run of these give-away discs cos they go like hotcakes at the gigs!)

Sneer ye not at the MU - they've saved my bacon on more than one occasion when unscrupulous industry-types have tried to take me for a ride.
This is an obvious thing to say, but anyway: labels tend to have a limited field of vision - the only way you can reliably bring yourself to their attention is to create such a demand / fan-base that they have no option but to yield to the pressure...
Having said that, as with any industry, the Music Industry is very much about "who you know" - I can think of associates who would be nowhere without the manager's contacts. But at the same time, if you get a bite at the cherry and you're not ready for it (I speak from experience...) it'll be a short career...
If you've sold 700+ CDs that's pretty good going, honestly! It's tough out there...
The only advice I can offer is to work on your fan-base worldwide - use the website, promotional marketing, anything that works...
The most reliable method is to have the fan-base - once you've got that everything else will fall into place. In the modern age, it's a lot easier to promote your endeavour (websites etc), but the downside would be that everyone's at it, so the "noise floor" is high...
The Music Industry is a grease-painted wall you have to climb over. Accept the fact that 999,999 out of 1,000,000 attempts you'll slide back down on your 'arris... Those who succeed ignore the failures and get back up immediately for another attempt.

However good you think you are at reading contracts, NEVER sign anything without a lawyer reading it first! I've seen some "benign" looking contracts that came across as "inviting" - once the brief went over it, my opinion changed...

Hi Dom, doesnt PHer Graham Collins(GCerbera on here) manage bands? Maybe worth dropping him a line? He is normally found on the Cerb forum or the Cerb Register www.tvr-cerbera.com
