New Washing Machine Advice

Need some advice from the collective.

Awoken this morning by the memsahib complaining about a lack of action from the washing machine.

Upon taking a look, there was some action, as seen by the smoke gently rising from the blooming thing and the lovely aroma of burning.

Now, my knowledge of the latest domestic appliances is weak to say the least, so I could do with some advice on what brand/type is best to purchase next before I hit Currys/the pimply faced youth in Currys.

Keep to well known makes and avoid Candy or Beko, they may be cheap but have poor reliability problems.

I just bought a new washing machine based on price
Its a Tricity Bendix AW1001W, latest model with a good review; £179.99 delivered with 2 years warranty. Got it from Rackhams (House of Fraser) of all places.
I was told unless you are going for an expensive Miele or Bosch, then the budget stuff are either two firms - Electrolux or Merloni. They make all the washers and brand them as Tricity-Bendix, Zanussi or Hotpoint etc. Pretty much all the same, you pay your money... features, spin speed etc.

We just bought an Ariston (part of Indesit I believe) A1436 from Currys, £225 IIRC. 1400 rpm spin, they also do it in 1200 and 1600 with appropriate £££ amendments.

Main criteria for us were speed versus £££ and ease of opening door as me Julie has a poorly hand and some catches are difficult for her.

Agree with avoiding the really cheap stuff though (Beko etc)...

£179 for a washing machine with 2 years warranty? I think i've been screwed - I paid £550 for a hotpoint washer a year ago I always get raw deals!

Miele, probably about the best washing machines on the planet. And dishwashers, tumble driers, and vacuums.

We bought an LG with a direct drive motor (i.e no belt drive, which is usually what fails) and it has a free 5 year warranty, somes in silver rather than white, and is really quiet. Cost abot £400 IIRC, but has been well worth the investment so far.

Forget Comet, etc.

Bought a Zanussi WJD1667W washer/dryer a year or two ago from a web supplier.

Saved £hundreds on High Street prices.

Have you not considered repairing the old one?

Repairing can be expensive. My tumble dryer just went up the spout but a £12 part fixed it.

The timer switch was well on the way to a new one!

Ahhh....spares, yes.

My last Hotpoint washer/dryer suffered a dud blower motor.

On inspection, 'twas obviously in need of new brushes.

Can you get new brushes...?

Can you buggery, they're a funny shape.....

New motor mate...sharp intake of breath....£££££££££££

So I did a bit of detective work.

Tracked down the maker of the original motor...

Phoned the factory.....

Delightful Brummie bloke knew exactly what I needed and mailed them to me same day...

Expensive....?

Absolutely FREE.....

The old girl (washer, not the memsahib) is about 15 years old, so it's probably about time it was chucked at a Comet (!) Also be worth replacing to get a more efficient model.

Would never actually buy from Currys/Comet (shudder) just a good place to see the beasts in the flesh.

I agree, although they are also probably the most expensive.
I used to install a lot of them for a well known high street dry cleaners where they used to run them
8 hrs a day 6 days a week for years on end.

They are as tough as they come.

Which Magazines best buy is the Bosch WFO 2467 at around £360.
