Music Identification on TV

I'm not so much starting a debate here, as expressing a wish.

Many is the time that I wonder what the background music on a tv show, is. I often read threads on this very forum asking "what was the song used during the Ferrari F430 segment of Top Gear last night?" or something of this type. It gets to the point where I hear a segment of a new track on tv every few days, that I would like to hear more of.

The obvious answer to this could be to include a track listing on the credits at the end of each tv show, as already happens with films. However, I can imagine this would still cause the trouble of working out which song is which (they are chronological, but that's not always definitive).

The other possibility would be to send the information in some kind of digital format. Something along the lines of: when a track appears on a tv show, the red button is hightlighted on our digital sets and prompts us to press it if we want to know the track details.

I'm sure there is a way that this information could be given to us - in fact, I'm quite suprised that the intellectual property of musical artists is not acknowledged already (legally/fairly speaking).

there is actually a mobile phone service that does justthis, but i dont know what it is, or how good it is.


IIRC dial 2580 (i think it's this, cos they made a big point of dialing straight down teh phone) and point it at the speaker. hangs up after 30 secs, checks the database and texts you back.

Music of the incidental type, is one thing, the 'Dell' adverts featured a well known voice which sounds like Phillip from 'rising damp'

I've used 2580 myself many times (I even get a discount) but it doesn't really work for tv as there's often speech on top of the music.

I'm in a band, and if a track of mine was used on a tv show I would want some acknowledgement, be it in terms of end-credits or otherwise. So I guess it's fortunate that my music is never likely to be used, unless my talent levels increase dramatically.

Movies get comprehensive credits - even though they sometimes need a bit of effort to use effectively - so why can't tv shows have similar information?!

Incidentally, so far Shazam (2580) has never failed to identify a track for me when more than 10 seconds of clear audio is available. That's in more than 100 attempts. Pretty damn effective, I have to say.

True! I was in a pub one day and an interesting song came on the stereo. I said to a friend, who was headed bar-wards: 'Can you ask the barman what that song is?'

He came back a minute later with the answer as a text on his mobile! I thoght he'd used it as a scratchpad, but no, he'd just held it to the speaker....

Yeah, this really annoys me too. They include credits for everyone down to the assistant coffee maker's best friend's cousin's dog's preferred leg-shagging partner, so why not the music? Even when the music's by some huge massive group whose record company has a reputation for vicious lawyers, they never credit the music. And credits for the music would actually be useful for the viewing public, unlike most of the credits - does anyone watching really give a shit about who did the makeup or who plugged the cameras in?

It worked for me the other day, Shazam identified the tango music in True Lies, even with speech over it. Guess there were 5 secs without speech. Brilliant.

isnt that just called the tango song? i guess theres some specific name for it though

It's called Por Una Cabeza, performed by the Tango Project. However what I should have done was look it up on imdb.com for free!

It is pretty annoying, it would take much to simply have a list of artists and track titles in the credits.

I've used Shazam a few times and it's awesome, but you do need the music to be loud.

back in Australia, often when running ads they would have a little symbol of a CD with the song title and artist in the bottom left of the screen, mainly because they were sick of getting lots of calls at the stations asking what the songs were.
