Now I'd be the last to defend Blair, but £300 per year doesn't seem an excessive amount for a public figure to spend on make-up when appearing in front of the camera or in public.

Sounds a bit of a bargain considering the amount of appearances, one of my friends is a makeup artist for a few MTV contributors & charges around £50 per hour.

The sum is a piffling trifle (expecially given this particular government's profligacy), the questiton is - in a society where males wearing make-up is confined to stage and television, does a male politician really feel that appearances on television warrant make-up?
I think it doesn't - it's vanity and perhaps a method of occassionally covering up Blair's physical exhaustion and illnesses.
As for the BBC - no suprise that this makes news and countless other examples of real waste never get a mention - but then again that's no surprise coming from an organisation that takes its funding for granted (and can put me in jail if i don't pay).

No, good makeup is part and parcel of good television. You have no idea how much of a difference good makeup can make to one's appearance when placed under 4KW of portable lighting.

my mate is an extra and works on a couple of soaps. One day she brought home a couple of snap shots she took of a certain Actor that gets a lot female attention and believe me... if they saw him in the cold light of day without his touche eclat, they'd run a mile.
