This is REALLY starting to annoy me.

My manager is really nosy and also a gossip. She keeps quizzing me about my private life and seems to get quite offended when I refuse to tell her anything. I've already told her that I won't share the details of my private life with her because she's a gossip (I once applied for a job in the same department where I work - I told her because I have to and within a couple of days everyone knew about it).

Am I being unreasonable?

No. It's none of her business, Tell her to bu66er off.

Or better still, tell her a pack of lies.

I'm sure she is breaking the rules by disclosing personal information and (depending if you want to stay there) you could have her on a disciplinary if you so wish.
I’d have to have a word with Mrs.K (An HR Manager for IBM) but I’m sure this is the case.

Haha! That could be pretty funny.

I'll have to think of something far fetched to tell her!

Unfortunately, it's par the course where I work for managers to openly discuss people's job applications, personal problems and pretty much anything told to them in confidence. I've been to HR about it before but if I pursued it, then my career would be pretty much over.

This is a great opportunity to wind her up mercilessly! I'm very much of the mindset that my work and home life are separate, so I don't discuss my private life at work. If this person is being so intrusive, start telling her massive whoppers, and see how long it takes her to stop asking. Obviously if colleagues question you after she has spread the word, tell them what you are doing, and to not let on to her.

And then you take them to Tribunal for unfair dismissal. Easy.

There's only so much of my private life I'd share with my colleagues and I'm fairly sure there's only so much of their's that they'd share with me.

Rather than telling her to get stuffed or telling her a load of fibs, however amusing they may be, a more diplomatic approach would not only get her out from under your feet but maybe the more beneficial approach in the long run.

You never know, maybe one day you might be her boss and she may have a dagger to bury in your back at somepoint...

Tell her you think you might be into animals, and also that you have random aroused feelings when in the company of children.

That should keep her away.

Best rule. Keep you work and home life seperate! I fell foul of this before and had them using my home position as ammuniton. Now I keep all my private life to my self.

Or you're feeling a bit uncomfortable because you've been experimenting a bit and your g/f was a bit rough with the strap on.

Ask her if, in her own private life, she wears a PVC gimp suit and takes it up the sherriff's badge. That'll shut her up.

DON'T tell her any porkies, she might be the vindictive PMS beetch you think she is.... I'd warn her politely that your private life is none of her business and if necessary back it up with a recorded delivery letter to her boss, asking/telling them to make her desist...... otherwise these nosy beetches usually twist everything you say to their advantage and your disadvantage at a later date. Only personally met with this once, nosy beetch of a directors secretary who was "gathering fuel" for a waster of a director (who was later fired for incompetency) to pass the blame onto unsuspecting juniors. Told her in no incertain terms to bu99er off!
