Flourescent orange 'birdboxes'

What are they for ?,

Roughly 5 foot tall poles with a bright orange 'roof' on top. They normally live by roadsides out in the sticks. There are two schools of thought :

A) They mark a public right of way
B) They mark a buried gas line, and are made to be visible from helicopters.

Can anyone confirm what they are ?

Or a buried sewer, or power cables.

Can I add a question...what sort of helecopters want to know where power cables are?

Probably indicate an oil pipeline.
