It's a little more about Unionism Vs. Republicanism. Our two countries just happen to have different religions.

There are Protestant Republicans and Catholic Unionists. Not as voicferous as you'd imagine, and all that I know live in the republic, but still.

It's got sod all to do with religion and everything to do with tribalism. Key word in that story is "community" being used to distinguish "us" from "them". The situation is ludicrous. One side's elders call upon the other side's elders to control the paramilitaries as if the other side was an organised entity with a clear leadership and a chain of command. It is just reinforces the sectarianism. The Northern Irish conflict is so parochial, and the politics so profoundly childish that it almost defies belief.

I suspect your post was tongue in cheek, but I'd say that 99% of the people of NI just want a quiet life and live together quite happily. Ballymena is profoundly Protestant - It's Ian Paisleys heartland after all, so you are going to get some halfwit thinking they are saving the world by painting 'Taigs Out' on a pub wall. The reality is probably that if they were faced with a pistol down a dark alley, they would lose control of their bodily functions.

My wife is from Co.Derry and we go over regularly and have an absolutely fantastic time. Her family and friends live in a profoundly catholic village, would in all honesty vote Sinn Fein, but they make me (and any of our friends)with English accents particularly welcome and seem genuinely pleased that people from 'accross the water' want to come to their part of the world.
