Off to an evening wedding reception this weekend, not sure whether to get suited and booted, or just go dressed in smart casual since we wont be attending the wedding itself earlier in the day. I dont think the bride and groomy are going to be changing into evening wear... Advice, oh PC PH wardrobe consultants? :)

Smart side of smart casual, something like a linen suit perhaps.

I've got the same problem in 2 months. Evening doo and no idea what to wear! Last wedding I went to (8 years ago!) I was the bridesmade so didn't really have any problems!!!

Similar problem, I have 2 to go to in the next 3 weeks, think this weekend will have to be suited and booted, but luckily (not sure if that is the correct word) for the next one I'm in a morning suit (bestman honours) so thats a no-brainer.

Quick thread hi-jack, other than the stag do (he survived) and the speech (almost done) what other things have I got placed upon my shoulders as the best man??

Smart casual.

Best weeding reception I went to was when the married couple decided to have reception - in garden as Barbecue und we all changed into shorts und T shirts.

So thats three votes for smart casual then! Cheers

Whilst you lot are in fashion advice mode, has anyone got links/pics of currently fashionable 'smart-casual' suits etc? Ive only ever owned regular suits (which never got worn) in the past.

* organise the ushers on the day
* look after the groom on the big day - take him for a walk when his bride is doesn't turn up, feed him ciggies etc etc
* dance with the bride's mother
* sleep with the bridesmaids

Note - do not mix up the last 2.

If in doubt, wear a suit - it's never out of place at these events.

The best thing mine did for me on the day was just be there for assistance. Practical assistance, for example keeping hold of the marriage certificate so I didn't have to walk down the isle with it in my hand. He basically acted as a facilitator (along with our wedding co-ordinator). He had to know who people basically were (i.e. which family they belonged to or who to ask to find out). Practial things like that that meant I didn't have to worry at all.

I just turned up, got married, smiled, did my speech, relaxed and loved every minute of it. Any annoyances, decisions etc he took for me.

Ahh thats not quite so easy, that was hopefully going to be the plan, so much so that I'm turning up a day early to help out with some of the arrangements so he doesn't stress as much..... In fact I hadn't been in touch for 2 weeks I had an anxious phone call last night just make sure I was alive.

He was not impressed when I said I was just doing it to see how long it would be before he rung me, he would probably be even less impressed if I told him I won the bet between my mates as to the length of time he would start to get worried..

UKBob - another vote for the smarter side of smart casual. I'm thinking slacks (chinos etc), shirt (no tie) and a jacket...

I went to an Evening Reception 2 weeks ago and my other half went smart casual as I did. Some people that arrived in the evening were wearing smart jeans and nice shirts - so really its up to you!

Have plenty of cash on you.

Bailed out my best mate 3 times on his big day - various tips, registry office fees!(payable on the day), rounds of drinks for close family later in the day when his limited resources had expired.

Bugger still hasn't reimbursed me, thanks for the reminder.

Smart Casual by the way, so long as it has a collar and you look like you made an effort the B&G shouldn't be too offended. Dress to impress, a wedding is good place for meeting ladies in 'high spirits'.

I have a collar, an aide memoire so to speak, which is tethered to the leash my girlfriend has been holding for a number of years. Needless to say I'll be wearing it

Current vogue is for women to wear very little, and any dress should preferably leave little to the imagination.

Hope that helps.

I bet not many folks know that if they go for the full 'Moss Bros penguin suit morning wear' monty, that the hats and gloves are not for wearing. They are accessories for carrying only. If you see a truly posh upper crust wedding only the token plebs and celebs who have been invited can be seen wearing them. Stephen Fry tells how he commited this fo-pah at the Royal wedding, but a freindly footman put him straight just in the nick of time :snigger:

There was a time when the 'hirers' would carry one set size only hats and gloves in stock and inform the great unwashed when they volunteered sizes at measure up that you dont actually wear them. But this is poor form, the truly posh have the correct sizes, and dont wear them.

Useless information item #456
