Help on Venice Req.

Since booking my trip to Venice I have been told by some people, don't know if they are winding me up, the following.
1/. 4 days is too long, as you can see it all in 2.
2/. I won't get a meal for under 80.00 per head, coffee is a tenner eveywhere.
3/. There is nowhere within walking distance to find cheaper alternative places to eat and drink, I am staying in San Marco.
I am off to Oz in Dec for 3 weeks and am not really in a position to waste loads of cash on a long weekend trip, perhaps I should cancel and lose my air fare.
If this is nonsense (I hope it is), then what is the average price for a reasonable meal out there?
Any help appreciated. Thx

1/ You could spend 2-3 days in the S Marco area alone, let alone wandering off & getting lost
2/ you'll get good food for under 1/2 that amount, 'if' you go to the right places (i.e. where the locals eat, away from S M's square.)
3/ You will find them & you can walk to them. (if youre that lazy take the vaporetto.)
its like any big tourist city, stay away from the traps & use your noddle & you'll be fine...if youre gonna have coffee on the square, expect to pay £10 a head, but its a bit more than just a starbucks with a view!

Do yourself a small favour. Last time we went (ive been 4-5 times now) i bought a guide by Fodors (sp?) in it, they've got walks that guide you around some of the lesser know areas (jewish ghetto/ca' d'oro etc) that are really worthwhile.
If its the food youre worried about, stick with the guides recomm. & you'll be fine. depending on how 'expensive' your taste is with regds to wine, i'd expect 'quality' food with a 'reasonable' wine (local) to set you back £15-25 for lunch p/p and £30 + for dinners. Dont be afraid to 'get lost', you'll enjoy it much more.

Ist nonsense. Ist Piazza San Marco Go to top of the Campanile for toppest view. Take in character of the Piazza und its lay-out Ist a trapezoid. Look at the buildings und then compare to Renaissance painting in art museums.
Look at the Torre d'Orlogio closely und appreciate the beauty of the zodiacal clock.
Treat yourself to an ice cream at Florians - just to experience oldest cafe in the world.
Appreciate the full beauty of the shape und blend of East/West elements in the mosaics on the Basilica di San Marco. (Ist supposed to have housed mortal remains of St Mark) und many of the treasures within stem from Venetian dominance of the medieval past.
You could spend one day alone in Palazzo Ducale.
Then there ist Arenale - No 5 vaporettto goes inside it - und there ist more to find out at Museo Storico Navale.
Explore narrow sidestreets of Castello und visit Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni -ist short walk from San Marco.
ist University quarter - und lots of decent cheap eaty places there
Lots of places sellling pannini too. Ist expensive to eat on Grand Canal - but you look in the little side streets und ginnels - und you find a gem of a place to eat.
Ist not a big city und walking ist the way to see und feel it properly.
Und also - you can take vaporetto (you can buy saver ticket for duration to hop on und off!) to Murano (glass blowere und see Venetian glass being made) (ist vaporetto no 52 undit also stops at Borano (but ist hourly stop to there - No 12 ist more frequent
) Burano ist a must see - sort of miniature Venice - und reasonable cafes und restaurants there too. Torcello has lot of restaurants at Ponte del Diavolo - und all very, very reasonably priced for lunch
Und if you want a sunbathe :rollyes: - ist Lido.
So - you may find 4 days ist not enough time
