Actually, I have a very high regard for Dave Whelan as a businessman, being in the same trade, I can remember him opening his first shop in Wigan in the sixties, after selling out his "Whelan's stores" discount chain to Morrisons.....
Can't understand why they have singled out JJB, but no mention of "Streetwise Sports", and "JD" though...at least JJB sell sports equipment as well as fashion sportswear......

I believe the point which is being made is that it is probably the shop most frequented by chavs. Agreed it`s a sports shop, but what they sell most of is "designer gear" with a "sporty label". How many of their customers actually buy sports clothing in order to participate in sporting activity?
So everyone with a sporty label, or designer gear is a chav? I reckon the fashion that the majority deem fit to wear will come under fire no matter what, and all this "JJB is a chav shop" is all a bit pathetic. I'm sure it makes everyone feel that little bit more superior to go on about chavs a little bit more...

It is no secret that a classic "chav" uniform is a sports (or football) shirt, tracksuit bottoms and a pair of leather street trainers. Regardless of sporting intention or not, this is what a lot of them wear.
I went into JJB a couple of months ago to get some running gear, including a pair of proper nylon running shoes. They do not sell any kind of nylon shoes - they were all fancy leather covered jobbies with practically flat soles that came in a variety of flourescent colours and groovy textures, none of which were suitable for any kind of abuse from fast sporting use. That, and football boots. That's it!
I had no more luck with the shorts and t-shirts - they were mostly thick cotton/polyester jobs with hooded tops and the like. The only brand they stocked with the kind of things I was looking for was Patrick and that chicken brand - everything else "known" like Nike, Adidas, Reebok et al was evidently produced with much more focus on form than function. This as it happened suited me just fine, because the prices of Patrick gear were very reasonable.
I walked over to get a tube of shuttlecocks as well - and whaddya know, they were all plastic ones. How can a shop call itself sporting when it doesn't sell standard running shoes and a tube of feather shuttlecocks for goodness sakes?
This wasn't a local high street offshoot either - this was one of their converted warehouse megastores.
I then went to a local sports shop that actually stocked goods meant for sporting use, which was a tiny and cramped hole-in-the-wall type place - three different types of feather shuttlecock and 5 different fittings of various proper running shoes later, I was a happy bunny.
Make NO mistake - JJB is chav fashion first, sports second.
And hence, we have every right to poke a bit of fun at them.

Quite right......
I run a traditional type sports store, which sells everything from a javelin to a jockstrap, with over 5,000 product lines....
I get customers from all over who tell me "At last, a REAL sports shop"...
This is not to knock Dave Whelan at JJB though, although he is rather ruthless......
When his son in law Duncan Sharpe, (who was MD at JJB) committed suicide through stress a couple of years ago he was asked, "What you you rather do, have your son in law back, or lose JJB?".......to which he replied "Mmmm, I'll have to have a think about that one".............

But your store is not mentioned as a chav haven. Jealous? Definately not doing as much business. Whelans move from 'sporting goods' to 'sports wear' has done him well - I wear trainers every day...they have to come from somewhere. Associating him with chavs does not seem to be the act of someone without some kind of issue with him.

Why does everything have to boil down to some kind of negative common denominator?
For what it's worth, I found the results fairly amusing (and by the way, this was the result of a poll published on the Beeb - not a personal opinion created and expounded by WR), and I am in completely agreement that JJB is not first and foremost a sports shop for sporting people.
This does not mean to say they are without merit or shouldn't be allowed to serve a different market - as you rightly pointed out with your purchases of trainers from there. What we are merely saying is that it is a popular chav haunt, which is just an exercise in a bit of good ol' British humour poking as opposed to any real animosity. In my experience, and as I said earlier on, JJB is fashion first, sports second. This does not mean it's a bad shop - it just means that if you're after a good stock of proper sporting goods you should look elsewhere.
We are NOT saying you are a chav because you shop there (heck, I shop there for certain items) - maybe you take offense because you assume this implication?

Fistly I did not associate him and JJB with chavs, the poll did, all I did was post a link...
As, stated previously, I am a big admirer of Whelan and what he has acheived since breaking his leg for Blackburn Rovers in the 1960 FA cup final against Wolves, then starting out with a single market stall on Wigan market......
Likewise John Wardle and 17 year old (at the time) David Makin at JD, who started out with a tiny shop in Mossley in 1981.....

But never mind!
Sports shops are awful places (no offense intended to anybody here who happens to own one)! It's the big chains that are truly dreadful.
One chain in particular who I won't name, seems to have found a method of cost-cutting by scraping bits of disgarded gum from the underside of public benches, and moulding them into something resembling employees.
