THIS IS A VERY SIMPLE EXPLANATION:
when the jet engine lands on donnies room the world changes and donnie becomes "the reciever". it means he is the chosen one who now has some special powers like super strength, levitation, telekensis. his role is to guide the artefact (teh jet engine) through a portal to make sure it then reemerges in his world.
everyone else become manipulators whose sole purpose is to guide donnie into making sure that he gets the engine through the portal.
the science of it is all based on the book that donnie reads called "the philosophy of time travel" by roberta sparrow. unfortunately the book was made up for the purpose of hte film and doesnt actually exist (as far as i am aware anyway).
teh big question the film is meant to bring up is:
who is controlling it all? if these people are changed to control hte events that are about to happen then is god responsible? if so then why is this all happening in the first place? surely god could do all that anyway.
as i said. watch the directors cut, it has extracts from the philosophy of time travel and does explain a lot more.

The one on the right however, is some what confused as to why he's lower than the one on the left.
Simple really, but I must admit the medication helps.

I presume that was the extracts of the book cut from the original film. So, did everyone figure all of the rules out watching the 'normal' version of the film, or just enjoy it not really understanding?

I'll have to watch it again with this in mind. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused. I did think I was losing my marbles a bit

It's being show outdoors this Saturday at the Royal Kensington Gardens, so a bunch of us are going to see it again. Also has the National Symphony Orchestra doing a performance of the soundtrack, and the composer doing Mad World. Hope the weather holds.....
that would be an amazing thing to see if it is done well (which i guess it would if hte NSO is playing!)
looks like it might be worth looking into.
