Last week, I had a meeting in the centre of the ex-maritime port power.

Now, whilst Manchester and it's environs are hardly The Hanging Gardens of Babylon themselves and I am far from some scouse-bashing Tony Wilsonite, something did raise a question.

How - no, make that how on earth - did this place achieve such entitlement and what or more specifically were are the judges hoping to find experience suitable for such lofty proclaimation?

I certainly love the industrial history of the place and would love nothing more than some genuine restoration of former greateness but these meaningless pronouncements seem to me a latter day civic prosthetic which represent a triumph of outspoken hope over any tangible sense of purpose or progress, against an all too visible backdrop of at the very least, a most unseemly architectural decay.

I thought they just chose a run down slum and spruced it up with a few museums and put some opera on - otherwise how did Glasgow win the same accolade??

European booby prize.

Mainly because the government pilfered the £2bn Europe gave liverpool to regenerate and sent it over to Ireland to help the peace process so we had to get something esle.

Place is a run down dump for sure.
