No, not a spotty teen band sponsored-dunny but our upstairs loo has a leak - from where I do not know! It's coming through our kitchen ceiling though ... (clean water that is).

Once the main pipe goes into the back I can't see where other than that it could leak from as water comes out when flushed from around the base of the toilet itself. Can't see that it's cracked anywhere.

Once the loo is isolated water-wise and you've drained it and the cistern, anything I should know about taking it apart ... ?

Looks simple enough but you know how these jobs end up.

Usually the cistern just sits on top of the pan base (with maybe a couple of bolts to locate/secure it). There's a seal between the two which can fail - big rubber or foam ring 2 or 3 inches across. Costs pennies to replace; just drain and lift the cistern, swap the seal and pop it back down.

Its unlikely to be cracked, and can only leak from the soil pipe connector (unlikely) or the connection between toilet and cistern (either a pipe or a rubber doughnut thingy).

Either way, it aint rocket science
Good luck

Surely the best way to locate the leak, if you don't know where it's coming from, is to drain the cistern (lift lid, tie up ballcock, flush).

If you still get a leak thereafter, it's coming from the pan - if not it's a cracked cistern or a cistern gasket. Oh and check that the ballcock is closing the inlet valve properly when the cistern is full.

Never heard of a cracked cistern before, but rubber seals can always perish.
