Flies – do they nest?

Last couple of days I’ve come home to find about 20 flies in my flat. Not normal house flies but bigger ugly mothers. Most of them were trapped between the blind and the window trying to get out. Thing is there were about the same number yesterday when I came in but the back door to the kitchen was open so I assumed they got in there. After opening all the doors and windows I got rid of them. Went to work this morning and came back to find another 20 odd zipping round. I checked and all the doors and windows were shut so I’m buggered if I know where they came from.
I know they come from maggots so maybe there are some maggots in my flat in some mouldy old crap that fell down behind a cupboard. Nice. I can’t smell anything. I’ve checked all the nooks and crannies and can find nothing. I have a cleaner come every other week and I’m not the type to leave mouldy rotting food round the house. So do flies nest or something? How can I get rid of the buggers?

I had the same problem with a house I rented when I was at law school.
Utter infestation, usually finding hundreds of the things trapped between the window and the blind in the bathroom.
In my case, eggs appear to have been laid/flies had been hibernating in the roof tiles, which then hatched/woke up when the warm waether arrived.
I believe that they were cluster flies, and some info is available here. It appears from that site that they are considered a pest, and therefore your friendly local council should be able to deal with them gratis...
Thoroughly disgusting experience though, which led to me moving out PDQ.

Happened to me once. I got back from my holiday and there were hundreds (It seemed!) behind the kitchen blind. Big bastards they were too. Turned out I had forgotten about a chicken carcass in the oven and left it there for a week when I went away.
