Licensing Hours

We had a leaflet put through our door last night advising us that the pub/carvery restaurant at the end of our road has applied for an extension to it's licensing hours.

Whilst in principal I have no immediate objection to a few extra hours at the weekend, what they seem to be proposing is a complete change in the usage of the premises.

Proposed closing times as follows:

Monday to Weds 1 am Close
Thurs 2am close
remainder 3am including sunday

Obviously i have made my objection to the council, is there anything else I could or should be doing to help prevent this?

surely it would it be a breach of my human rights?! (only kidding)

Just because they have applied doesn't mean they are going to operate those hours.

However the current changes to licencing regime means everyone has to apply (by tomorrow) and whilst going to the hassle you might as well apply for an extension to the hours.

How is opening a bit later a complete change in the usage of the premises?

One of our local pubs has until now been very strict about closing on time (unlike the other 2) but is still applying for a licence until 1.30am everyday not that we ever expect them to stay open that late. It's all about flexibility of hospitality.

arent the pubs watching each other?

something along the lines of that they intend to stick together on times and not change them, but if one goes for a 1am closing time - they all will to make sure none of them get an unfair advantage.

With regard to the change of useage AlexH, I can't see there being much demand for carvery restaurants at 3am especially when it's normally empty by 9pm already. Also, the bar itself is never that busy that it could justify the wage bill to stay open the extra hours.

as it has been said above, it maybe that they are simply applying for the license so that it is there should they require it. Quite why anyone would want a 3am close on a sunday is beyone me though.

I agree on the carvery, but you did say originally pub/carvery, so I presume they want to increase the amount of business on the pub side (which still isn't a complete change of usage), but as minornut says above, I would bet it also has a good deal to do with flexibility; I wouldn't expect them to actually be open at anywhere near 3am on a Monday (presume thats what you mean) morning.

I've just completed the conversion form for a Members Club that I'm involved in - it's a lot easier & cheaper to put any variations in now, rather than jump through all the same hoops at a later date.

So don't panic, all they're doing is giving themselves a large time window within which they can operate hours to suit demand - saves them having to do anything if they want to open later one night for a wedding party for example.

There's a lot of empire building going on at Local Authorities over this new responsibility- kerrr-chiiing!!!
