Suits you sir!

Or does it. Going to a wedding tomorrow and need a new suit. I have no woman to advise on purchase. Main concern is around fit.....bear with me, I'm shit at clothes shopping!
Two questions. Firstly, how long should the ideal trousers be ( I have short legs and have often copious amounts of material bunched around my ankles - no turn ups please!).
Second. How does one pick the best fit of jacket? I don't expect to be able to do yoga in it but don't like something too restrictive which is what I normally end up with if I listen to the women in the shop.
PS. Yes I know I should know this butI'm a T-shirt, jeans and trainers kinda bloke who hasn't worn a suit for 4 years!

Hire one! You are highly unlikely to find something to fit properly tomorrow, it'll need taking up etc at least. Then (assuming you actually want to buy one) when you have time take a friend (female or gay for choice) with you to advise you.
The trousers should not gape at the pockets (often happens with flat front trousers) or be tight anywhere (especially around the nads). Length should be so that there is a slight "break" in the fabric at the front where it hits the top of the shoe but not too much & no bunching around ankles!
Jacket should fit well around back and shoulders.
When you try one on it should hang from the shoulders. If you are looking straight into the mirror, check that the shoulders are the widest part, not the arms (if this is the case you should go up one chest size or try another jacket cut).
When wearing the jacket sit on a chair & reach quite far forward, it shouldn't be too restrictive. Likewise try to pick something off a high shelf - the jacket shouldn't feel too tight.
If you do want good advice when you are out, independent suit shops or large chains like M&S often have trained people in who will tell you if you look like a plonker. Places like Ciro Citterio & their ilk will sell any old crap.
If there is a Zara near you they do some stylish suits for quite low prices, but don't bother if you are large build.

If you're London based, go to Gary Anderson in Saville Row. They hire a lounge suit for about £125 and they seriously know their stuff. More expensive that Moss Bros and the usual High Street stuff, but worth it IMO. I bought my wedding suit from them, and hired the best man's and brother of brides and they were absolutely superb.
