Agreed to go for a "gentle run" on Sunday with a bloke from the Marines.

What can I expect, other than to be about 3 BPM away from a heart attack for most of the duration?

I think you might also expect an initiation ceremony involving some of the local wildlife and your buttocks.

You've still got time to make a decent excuse. I suggest you do unless you are in peak condition.

Needn't necessarily be that quick (5.30-6.00m/m) but it could go on for some time

I ran a half marathon in 2001 with a friend who is in the parachute regiment..... He ran the course with a huge rucksac full of wet sand and he beat me by 14 mins

Expect to vomit......

Unless he's the type who lacks self esteem and feels the need to prove he's hard to everyone on the planet, expect exactly what he promised...a gentle run.

Quick pace for sure, but nothing too excrutiating (if you're in decent running shape.) If you can't keep up, he'll likely adjust the pace to your comfort zone.

If he is the aforementioned type and shows up with a rucksack, just walk away. You'll just hurt yourself. And you've nothing to prove to him anyways.
