I thought men were meant to be the wankers who treat people like shit, shag about and were generally out of order.

Why is it then that my mate and I have both fallen victim to players of the female variety in recent weeks? Both laid it on thick with the emotional blackmail and how much of a bad life they've had with blokes and then it transpires they've got several blokes on the go!

What the fuck is going on?!

It was at my house. I'd have felt a little foolish!

Women are just as bad as women. In fact I'd go as far as to say that women have more of a materialistic mentality. Next time a female friend and her mates are talking about a new bloke, or what have you, just see what topic comes up first. Is it either Sense of humour, romantic notions, or is it his job/car/financial status. They are a lot more 'blokey' than all the chick flicks would have you believe!

They're both materialistic: men, about women's looks; women about men's earning power. But equally superficial in those areas, I think. It seems to stem from the traditional roles of who can be a good provider for whomever they want to reproduce with.

Although, more recently, it seems more acceptable in pop culture (all the trampy Britneys) for women to be seen as promiscuous as men (or at least make less effort of being discrete). But, I don't think they are any more trampy than before, just more open about it.

Oh yeah, it's very true (not universally obviously).

Thing is, women can get very materialistic when it comes to blokes because unlike the days of house-bound oppression, women have careers, which means they get picky. Don't want a bloke they have to pay for, or one who'll make them look shabby.

At the same time, they hold all the strings in the 'pulling' stakes. Men might think it's their 'prowess' that rakes in the women, but it isn't. Gazboy often says that if a woman wants to pull on a night she will, whilst a man has to rely on luck, and Gaz is right. As a result, men look desperate and women know how to use that - they can throw you away like the most bastardly of men will do with women if they want.

Women either approve of you or they don't, and if you're feeling lucky, you can be successful.

However, there are some women who can throw men away without a care. TBH, I don't have time for anyone, male or female, with the 'fk and chuck' mentality. What's going to happen when they really need someone in their lives? They could meet their ideal match for all they know, yet they'll check them out like an off-the-shelf product and compare them to their 'exes' and 'mark' you out of ten. How shallow. How sad.

Lets not stereotype. There are plenty of nice ladies out there, just as there are plenty of nice blokes (like me hehe).

Yeah, I've found that out to my detriment mate.

I'm a 'nice' bloke, or at least I have been thought of recently. The sort you'd take home to your mother. The sort your granny thinks is nice. And as a result completely unsexy. 'Nice' blokes don't drive E-Types or live in slick penthouse apartments or do jet-setting jobs. And I've had enough of coming across like a 'nice' bloke.

There are 'nice' women too, only I've been told they don't like cars, or rock music, or extravagant nights out. But who's told me this? World-weary mates.

Maybe we should stop all this stereotyping and take people on an individual level. Yes, some women are bitches, yes some men are bastards, but it's this bracketing of personality types that's ruining everyone's social scene.

Mainly because I don't fit into one. I've been told by the rock chicks that I don't fit because I don't wear trainers, have piercings or dye my hair. I've been told by the wine bar lot that I look like a 'predatory type', and of course my friends - the people who really know me, think I'm an all-round sound bloke.

So stop trying to bracket me!

Shallow chicks with very bad taste? Trainers + piercings + badger hair?

Yes, we girls are evil critters...

I'm sitting in an office in the US at the moment. There is a woman who used to be a bloke a few offices down. So in some cases blokes are the new women

She looks quite nice too, until you realise what you're looking at (good luck to her, but YKWIM).

Being shallow, insensitive, arrogant, selfish, rude materialistic - they're all people things, not a girl or bloke thing. However, I do feel that along with all the negative stereotyping of women in terms of 'their place is in the home' and all that came lots of 'positive' steroetyping in the sense that they were all warm and cuddly and just being shat on by nasty men.

The reality is that there are just as many bitches out there as bastards. Being 'nice' isn't a bad thing, it's just that the word gets grouped with 'weak' and 'boring'.

Whatever you do, don't try and move away from being who you are because a load of jumped-up, materialistic nothings still mentally stuck in some kind of high school clique tell you that you don't fit in. Trying to be someone you're not will either convince nobody, or convince everyone and leave you with a group of 'friends' who'll drop you the moment they find out who you really are.

So, be yourself, anyone who doesn't like it can fk off. That leaves you with a group of decent people and you'll find the right girl there or not at all.

There's another side to this though. Not to do with relationships at all (which would appear to me to be the same old same old). This is the "ladette" cutlure in which certain groups of young women vie to be more like bad stereotypes of chav young men than...chav stereotypical young men.

As far as I can tell this is new.

"Girl Power" meets "Chav" in a explosive mixture.

Whilst this is a tiny minority of young women they are highly visible and, it would appear, as likely to kill themselves in car crashes as their young lads.

Not a good thing.

And this I notice NOT because I'm a grumpy old git. OK maybe it is...

Tell you what, though. Sterotypes exist because there are enough people who match the 'type for it to be recognised.

Only a tiny minority match the sterotype, of course.

Some of the most aggressive drivers I've seen recently are women. Bad enough in a bloke but deeply unattractive in a woman.

Some are just very confident and rightly so when they drive well. It's probably tough for women who have that confidence and then get labelled as aggressive and nasty by blokes who can't cope with the roles being switched. The women who compete in motorsport must have very, very thick skins. (But I gather moisturising helps).

Why make the distinction, Busa? Would you think aggression is somehow more attractive in a man to the other sex, than it is in a woman to us? To me, it's only got negative connotations no matter to whom it applies.

And to Tuna. Sadly, your comments are still *very* true.

Come on guys - it's time to move out of the Dark Ages!
