Im 29, so not young anymore but not exactly elderly either :)

The knuckle on my left thumb and left index finger are in a great deal of pain.

Things Ive had in the last 50 hours which I dont normally have are cranberry juice and Wytch Craft beer (not much of either)

The pain is pretty bad! I cant bend the joints fully over without grimacing slightly.

My joints (except ankle which is sometimes stiff in the mornings after lots of wine) are ok. Sometimes fingers are a little stiff (wine again?) but not usually.

My mother has fairly bad arthritis, and girlfriends dad was diagnosed last week with a bad degenerative case of it also.

(sorry this is overly long and drively, but Im scared...)

So, could I have arthritis? Why are those two joints which are usually ok suddenly so very painful?

sounds like the arthritis I get (only 27 though )

It's mainly where I have broken knuckles/fingers playing rugby. I have found that changes in weather affect them the greatest (they are aching pretty much at the moment). Sometimes a soak for a few minutes in warm water can alleviate the pain.

What do men have against doctors?

They're not that scary, you know!

It's always the same thing with you lot...

1. get slight pain in finger / ankle / arse
2. ignore
3. start worrying
4. self-diagnose after discussion with mates down pub / fellows on forums
5. diagnose self with diabetes / heart murmour / colon cancer / near death.
6. Get nagged by GF to go to the docs.
7. Ignore.
8. Goes away by itself.
9. Worry about deadly illness until..
10. 5 months later find out through some means that you had a mild case of piles.

(not trying to belittle your problem, of course UKBob - perhaps you should get it properly checked out though!)

Gout, maybe? Too much rich food.

If you want to look after your joints try a little cod liver oil and some N-acetyl glucosamine tablets.

I suffer with my RSI in my fingers through work (pipetting) and my ankle and toe also give me grief.

Thanks Titiany That about sums it up (except for the piles bit )

Z, what kind of rich food? I tend to eat a lot of red meat, drink loads of wine? Ive not done anything stressful, except play a few hours of golf on the PS2... egads, could that be it? I dont play PS much, and havnt done anything physically stressful with said digits.

What are good foods (and alcohols ) to keep joints in tip top?

Edited, what should be avoided? And what foods cause gout? And and and (so many questions ) is arthritis genetic? Dad's fine, but my mothers joints are not great.

I'm no doctor but I reckon you'd be really unlucky to have inherited arthritis from him.

When you're as close to your girlfriend as I am, words like sister just loose all their meaning

Gout is very painful, and IIRC the joints will be red and swollen.

Arthritis is unlikely at your age, and would tend to be more widespread. What type does your mother (I think you said your mother had it?) have?

I'd take some ibuprofen, ice the hand and keep it moving and see what happens.

My friend suffered similarly from his work as an electrician. He now taps keys on a computer, his doctor told him so long as he does that and not hold a drill/hammer/pliers, after a few years his hands will return to normal.

Are you very thin by chance? Not having as much fat/muscle on the hands doesn't help.

[quote=UKBob]Im 29, so not young anymore but not exactly elderly either quote]

At that age it's more likely to be Rheumatoid Arthritis, and not Osteo Arthritis (which is what mostly afflicts the elderly)

Strangely, Rheumatoid is relatively common in the 25 to 40 age bracket, but about 90% of sufferers are women.

It's actually an auto-immune disease, i.e. your immune system stops defending you and starts 'attacking' you instead.

Worth seeing your GP about, and fairly sharpish too.

Not thin, just average build. I wonder why his hands will return to normal, I thought when damage was done...

I used to crack my knuckles a lot, which i was told at the time would cause arthritis. But the pain is bad when the joints bend, and also very sudden. It came on over night.

Why sharpish? If it was rheumatoid, what benefit would seeing him tomorrow rather than next year have? (just curious)

'Cos if it is (and actually it's unlikely) the immune system will continue to attack itself, leaving you open to other illnesses!

By all means leave it for year if you want, it may get no worse, or it may clear up after a few pints of Guinness - probably worth trying anyway, just in the name of medical research...

I had the same problems, very swollen and painfull joints in fingers on left hand. GP prescribed Voltarol (anti-inflamatories) they didn't seem to do the trick so it was off to hospital. A simple blood test is all that was needed, I don't have arthritis. Joints still occasionally swell and cause pain, but I just take the Voltarol. Btw I am male aged 31.

I suffer from bad joints, but they hurt a lot less since I started taking Cod Liver Oil Tablets. Not sure if it is Psychological or not, but it works!!
