Sky+ recording "lost"...

Hello,

A colleague has lost his recording of Glastonbury from his Sky+ box. He's done nothing to delete it, it just doesn't appear on the sky planner anymore.

Is this a known problem? I.e. stuff going missing not Sky+ critiqueing his music taste. Is the recording still "there" and can he get it back.

He's pretty gutted as he was there and, I presume, it brings back good memories.

Very likely he hit the yellow button by mistake.

The only problem I really get with Sky+ is that the programs don't always start/end when the planner says they will.

I've lost countless episodes of Eurosport's WRC coverage in this manner, managed to get a full 30 minute program, but 25 minutes were of utterly uninteresting football matches - highly frustrating.

IMO there is no way he can get the program back... sorry.

I've had loads of similar problems with mine. I think there are a number of well known bugs with the software that cause problems.

It is a known bug. Variations include lost or failed recordings, corrupted files, and perfectly good looking entries in the planner failing to play when you ask them to. I've found these seem worst when the disk is quite full (ie over 75pc), and deleting everything and hard-rebooting the box seems to help. (but obv wont get the recording back).

I've had Sky + for a few years now and no probs with 'old' stuff that I've recorded whatsoever.

However, I have had 1 problem re-occur in the past week ....

I recorded "Road Wars" on Sky One one night last week. Sat down late that night to watch it, and the recording had failed

Well, not to worry, it's on Sky mix - so I duly recorded it last night (or was it the night before?) .... came to watch it, and the SAME PROBLEM again - recording failed.

I've never had this before, and has not happened to any other programmes/channels that I've since recorded/watched.

Remember it will auto delete older stuff if it thinks it needs the disk space, lost my 'race of champions' footage thanks to this. You have to press 'blue' to make it keep forever.

This is true, and I wonder if the key phrase here is "if it thinks it needs the disk space".

On a number of occasions, mine has reported, say, 20% free, but after a power-off reboot reports 50% free, with all the same recordings still present. Sky definitely need to improve the disk space calculations.

Looking to get Sky+ in the coming weeks myself, is it worth going for the 160 version or can the hard drive be upgraded in the standard box? also is it possible to transfer any programs onto DVD?

yep, that has happened to me on many occasions!, usually caused by the kids inadvertently setting something like Thats So Raven, or similar to record, every day!

I've already watched the entire 1st season of LOST over bittorrent, and yes I can assure you it utterly rocks.

Bought myself a Panasonic DMR-ES340V Recorder and it is possible to transfer from Sky + onto either VHS or DVD

No, but if i like to keep certain programmes it may just fill the standard hard drive up very quickly...
If i can transfer it onto DVD easily then no need to have such capacity. As i work shifts i tend to miss quite a few things of interest in the evenings.

I have the regular Sky+ Box.

We started losing programmes, programmes were in the planner and wouldn't play etc etc.

Hard reboot - didn't solve it. Deleted all the programmes so it was EMPTY and it only showed 50% free. So I had Sky support talk me through formatting the hard drive - and haven't had any trouble since.


I would definitely get the 160 version if buying new. If, like me, you have a regular Sky+ box and it is out of warranty then there are a range of suppliers who willl sell you a hard disk "guaranteed" to work of up to 250GB that can be put in it. Anyone who has changed a hard drive in a computer should be able to do it apparently - so I'll be giving it a go sometime later on this year...
